The Future of the Fashion Show

My take on what runways will look like in the “new normal”.

When I attended my first fashion show, Carlos Campos‘s Spring / Summer 2019 collection, I felt as though I was entering into a whole different universe. The show was part of The CFDA‘s New York Fashion Week Men’s Calendar, produced by INCA Productions, the company I was interning for. When the music started pumping, the room fell silent and I could feel the anticipation, as everyone was looking forward to Campos’s latest line of menswear. Once the models began gliding down the runway, the focus was pulled toward the perfectly tailored garments, some of my favorites in peach and vibrant yellow tones; half a year’s work packed into every beautiful piece.

A fashion show is a collective experience, everyone partaking in soaking up an intense, yet brief, five to ten minutes, where months of work and planning lead to what the future of fashion will look like. Having been an intern for three seasons of New York Fashion Week, I have seen, first hand, the amount of time, money, and effort that is required on behalf of both the brand and the fashion production company to put on a runway show with such precision- a few minutes of fashion perfection.

When I attended Alexander Wang‘s Spring / Summer 2020 show in Rockefeller Center last summer, I knew that the fashion industry was on the precipice of extreme change, albeit I had no idea it would happen so quickly. Alexander Wang had invited all of New York City to his public fashion show via social media and I knew I had to experience this show for myself. I flocked to the railing to see all of the names in fashion- yes I saw Anna Wintour with my own two eyeballs- both walk the illuminated catwalk as well as fill the show seats. This was Alexander Wang’s first fashion show open to the public and, what felt like, a huge innovation in the fashion world. Wang let everyone be a part of the experience and share in the excitement of his fashion show, previously offered to very few who make the VIP list. In just one night, I knew I witnessed fashion moving forward by leaps and bounds.

Undeniably, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many challenges for the fashion industry. Stores have turned off their lights due to mandatory government closures and social distancing requirements. Unemployment numbers have made it so that people are spending less and saving more, as the future looks uncertain for many. The question of whether in-person fashion shows were happening was rapidly circulating at the beginning of the year.

Would fashion houses be able to afford the expense? Would people be able to attend the event in person? If not, what would the presentation of a new collection look like?

Screen Shot 2020-09-09 at 9.56.03 PMBrands have been forced to make independent decisions on how they plan to present their collections, fragmenting a once cohesive industry. Many companies have forged ahead in planning digital and drive-in fashion shows, while others have decided to postpone their presentations altogether. Unlike many brands, Jacquemus decided to take the leap and hold their own in-person fashion show in a French wheat field with social distancing in place. Some brands, such as Off-White, have even taken this time to experiment with a see-now-buy-now opportunity in the future, where consumers can purchase clothes off the runway a month after they are presented. Now, if that doesn’t represent the “see it, need it, have to have it” consumer culture that permeates retail today I don’t know what does.

Despite the obstacles that the fashion industry has faced, we have seen some unparalleled creativity in the presentation of collections. LOEWE‘s Collection in a Box, shown below, is one of my favorites, which features a curated set of tangible components that represent the brand’s latest collection as well as what the fashion show would have looked like in a paper mock up, had it happened. Celine‘s fashion show, taken via drone on the Circuit Paul Ricard motor racing track in the South of France, was also an inventive approach, which was featured on various social media outlets and on the brand’s website. While, Lanvin decided to use the beautiful and intricate Le Palais Idéal, near Lyon, as the backdrop of a short film and lookbook to feature their latest. Brands have learned how to leverage livestreams, digital marketing, film making, and much more to keep their brands alive and relevant.

Yet, with a slew of fashion improvisations now over and done, there are clear reasons why in-person fashion shows just cannot be replaced exclusively with virtual presentations. A lot of the attention a brand receives is from having show guests dress in their latest collection and be photographed attending their fashion show. With virtually little to no attendance at the shows, less attention and press are gathered from these moments. With less influencers in attendance, there is also less organic sharing, posting, and videoing happening in the fashion world. During Copanhagen’s Fashion Week, for instance, popular brands like Ganni have taken major hits, earning $630,623 in earned media value between August 10th to 12th compared to $3,847,748 for the previous year and Saks Potts’s earned media value was $176,386, compared to last year’s $469,047. Another thing to consider is the over saturation of content on the internet and social media sites with every brand trying to compensate with virtual. When social media streams are being overwhelmed with content, it can be hard for certain brands to stick out and make their collections seen above the noise.

So what does this mean for the future of the fashion show when conditions return to a “new normal”? In the future, I see fashion houses reverting back to in-person fashion shows, yet retaining their current digital efforts, creating hybrid-type events. There is no denying that brands get more reach when incorporating digital elements to their events. However, given that customer engagement, press releases, and personalized influencer marketing are so critical in the fashion world, the impact of in-person is hard to recreate online.

Additionally, now more than ever, I think we are seeing individuals craving unique and special experiences, which are hard to replicate with today’s digital technologies. That being said, brands should be more motivated to look into innovative technologies that help push the envelope of the consumer experience itself. We might not have the technology now to foster those unique experiences from home, but we might in the future. Obsess is one company that is helping retailers utilize virtual reality to allow customers to visit stores from their phones. Who knows if fashion shows are next in line for a virtual reality transformation in the future.

Not only should time be spent around utilizing creative ideas to mitigate health concerns, but fashion brands should also be refocusing their efforts towards sustainability, given the incredible wastefulness regarding fashion production, as well as model representation on runways. With an increase in consumer exposure to brands, there will be a greater focus on company practices in both these realms, which have become increasingly important to, specifically, the Gen Z consumer. We have seen younger consumers prioritize supporting companies with a strong stance on sustainability and ecological preservation. Designer Gabriela Hearst‘s carbon neutral show, which appeared last year and was first in the industry, was a wake up call for everyone in fashion, showing that runway without a negative impact on the environment can be both beautiful and possible. This wave of shoppers and fashion influencers also take a strong stance towards companies who display a lack of body and racial representation, pushing brands to rethink who is walking down their runways. All things considered, fashion has a lot to think about for the future and should take this time to reflect on major changes occurring in the industry.

Overall, the future of the fashion show may look uncertain now, but I anticipate not for too long. The fashion industry is an incredibly creative and flexible industry, which is often rewarded for out-of-the-box thinking, innovation, and boldness. The COVID-19 pandemic has allowed some of the traditional “rules of fashion” to fall away to make room for immense creativity and unconventional thinking. From curated fashion “boxes” to buy now opportunities, runway has reached an inflection point of new possibilities and will never again be the same. The future of the fashion show looks in-person, digital, TikTok live-streamed, sustainable, inclusive, a virtual reality experience, and everything in between. If fashion is able to leverage the same mindset it has in terms of design as it is to operations and strategy, the fashion shows of the future are something to definitely be excited about.

3 Friends Picking their Top 3 Beauty Items Part VI

The 3 beauty products 3 of my friends swear by.

Just like beauty products, there are different friends for every occasion and season in life. Some are great to hang out at parties with, like a glitter shadow. Some are perfect for getting advice from, like a good color corrector. And some are great workout buddies, I’m looking at you rose facial mist. Not one friend will be your end-all-be-all and that’s a good thing. Each friend has their special place, which makes for a complete circle of friends and a well balanced make up bag. Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides

How often you use it

Every morning in my coffee

What you like about the product

As you age, your body starts to produce less collagen which is essential for skin elasticity, joint health, and so many other benefits. It’s flavorless, and I definitely can tell a difference in my hair and skin. The collagen also acts as a protein powder, so you feel more full after drinking it.

What you like about the product

The bottle feels fancy and old timey with the brown tint and medical dropper! Unlike some Vitamin C serums that can feel sticky, this one does not. I noticed a huge improvement in the brightness of my skin, elasticity, as well as the general texture and tone.

Stretch Concealer by Glossier

How often you use it

Daily, in replacement of an all over foundation. I use it to cover up blemishes and dark under eyes.

What you like about the product

I love how this concealer is light and not cakey at all. The worst feeling ever is when I feel my concealer cracking or building up in the crevices on my face and this is one of the few products I have tried that does not do that. I was finally able to find a product where I was able to have the coverage I wanted without the heavy cakey feeling that concealer usually has.

How you found it

I found the product in the glossier store in Soho. The store was too pretty to not buy anything and I was so glad I ended up buying the concealer!

Instant Detox Mask by Caudalie

How often you use it

Once or twice a week. Whenever I feel like my skin needs an extra boost.

What you like about the product

I have combination-oily skin and this product is able to minimize my pores, make my skin feel less greasy while still not creating dry flakes all over my skin. On top of using it all over my face on a weekly basis, it works amazing for spot treatment on acne. If I get a breakout, I put a little bit of this mask on the spots after a hot shower and it works like magic.

How you found it

It was recommended to me at a French pharmacy. My skin was getting really angry at the city air and I was getting a lot more breakouts than usual, the pharmacist recommended this mask for my combination skin type. I have been in love with this product since!

Normaderm Anti-Acne Double-Action Moisturizer with Salicylic Acid by Vichy

How often you use it

This is my daily moisturizer.

What you like about the product

I have combination skin, leaning more towards oily so a lot of moisturizers leave my skin feeling greasy and most cause breakouts for me even when they are marketed for my skin type. This moisturizer works amazing for me because it contains salicylic acid to prevent breakouts without making my skin flakey. The moisturizer absorbs into the skin really fast leaving a glowy dewy look.

How you found it

I had finished another bottle of the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel (which was the brand I had been using since middle school) and that was when I realized that it was doing nothing for my skin. That was when I decided to do my own research over what ingredients might actually help my skin and that is how I stumbled upon this product. I have rebought it countless times now and I will refuse to use any other moisturizer.

What you like about the product

Truly a holy grail product for me! This serum makes my skin super soft to the touch and gives it a youthful, almost glittery glow. I love that it evens out my skin tone and minimizes the appearance of any blemishes. Its slight citrus-y scent is very refreshing!

Gelatin Powder (Flavorless) by Great Lakes

How often you use it

This is an essential part of my everyday bedtime regimen! I try not to eat anything 3 hours prior to bed and right before I hit the lights, I consume 2 heaped spoonfuls of gelatin powder and down it with water.

What you like about the product

Those who know me well know that I swear by this! Gelatin powder thickens and lengthens my hair and nails, increases the collagen density of my skin, aids my weight loss efforts, strengthens my bones, increases brain function and so much more! I consume this on an empty stomach right before bed so that I don’t wake up feeling bloated.

Rose Water Toner by Fresh

How often you use it

Every morning and night after cleansing my skin.

What you like about the product

I love this product because it makes my skin look and feel refreshed! It immediately soothes and brightens my face and it helps reduce any redness on my skin. I usually stray away from scented skincare products but the fragrance of this toner is subtle and very calming.

How you found it

When I ran out of my local Chilean brand rose water toner in college, I frantically looked for an alternative that would work similarly on my sensitive skin. After testing several toners which ended up irritating my skin, I stumbled upon this one and have loved the way it makes my face feel.

3 Friends Picking their Top 3 Beauty Items Part V

The 3 beauty products 3 of my friends swear by.

Throughout my life, friends have always been the most important to me. For any friend of mine, I would stop everything to be by their side and I know that some of my closest friends would always do the same. Through my friends, I have been able to learn about different cultures and perspectives, how people approach different situations, how different people chose to spend their time, and everything in between. With every friend, I have learned something about myself too. What I value, why I am different, how I want to be, where I want to spend my time- the list goes on. That is the beauty in having true friendships, there is an unspeakable harmony in two people who are so incredibly different, sharing time and growing alongside one another. Sharing beauty tips is great, but it is only an infinitely small part of why I love my friends. (Stay tuned for next weeks 3 friends and 3 picks).

Lucas Papaw Ointment

How often you use it

I’ve been using this ointment everyday for the past 3 years. I usually apply it on my lips when they’re feeling chapped and even on my face before I apply my makeup. If my skin is feeling extra dry, I also apply the ointment on the areas that need moisture before I go to bed.

What you like about the product

I love this product because it is so compact, I carry it around in my purse when I go out and in my backpack when I go to school. Unlike other lip balms or ointments, this product really keeps my lips and skin moisturized all throughout the day. Because of this pandemic, I’ve been wearing face masks everyday, which often leaves my skin feeling dry. With the help of this product, I’m able to keep my skin moisturized and healthy.

How you found it

After I started college in Boston, I noticed my skin getting a lot drier than usual because of the cold weather. When I raised this issue to my mom, she suggested this product and I’ve been using it religiously ever since.

Revitalash Advanced Eyelash Conditioner & Serum

How often you use it

I use this product once a day, usually before I apply my makeup. Sometimes I use this product at night if I decide to not wear makeup that day.

What you like about the product

I love this product because I can really see a difference in my eyelashes after using it regularly. I’ve tried other eyelash serums before Revitalash, and I noticed little to no difference in my eyelashes. Since I wear eyelash extensions, my lashes carry more weight than natural lashes so it is important for me to keep them strong and healthy. After using this product, I noticed my natural lashes growing longer and thicker, which also prevents my extensions from falling off too easily.

How you found it

After complaining about how easily my lashes fall off to my lash technician, she suggested this product and guaranteed that I would see results. Needless to say she was definitely right.

Brow Wiz by Anastasia Beverly Hills

How often you use it

I use this product every time I leave my house. When I don’t feel like putting on a full face of makeup, I just use this product on my eyebrows and it makes me feel and look so much more confident.

What you like about the product

I love this product because it is so easy to use. The texture is waxy, so I’m able to create lighter brows by using the eyebrow pencil with a light hand, yet I’m also able to create darker brows by applying this product with a little more pressure. This product lasts all day, is easy to use, and is my absolute favorite makeup product of all time.

How you found it

I’ve seen a lot of beauty influencers on Youtube and Instagram use this product when I was in high school, but I was never able to get my hands on them as they weren’t sold in Indonesia yet. It wasn’t until college was I able to finally purchase this product, and I’ve been loving it ever since.

Ultimate Arch Definer & Clear Brow Gloss by BBB London

How often you use it

Every day!

What you like about the product

Having tried MANY different brow pencils, brushes, etc, I found this one and would never use anything else…it’s AMAZING. The arch definer is the best at building a very natural look that matches the colour of my eyebrows (which are a strange in between colour), plus has a great little brush at the end to blend it in. The gloss is also so great and creates a great shape that holds in place literally all day. I sometimes just do my eyebrows and nothing else as it makes such a significant difference to my look.

Liquidlast Eyeliner – Brown or Pointblack by MAC

Usually everyday but in lockdown times only when I’m seeing people !

What you like about the product

My eyes are quite sensitive and also water a lot,  and my face doesn’t seem to like make up staying on all day (!! It slides off my face instantly!). I’ve tried so SO many different liquid eyeliners, including more expensive ones, and nothing stays on like the MAC one.  It doesn’t budge whatsoever, even if swimming or whatever.

How often you use it

I use this whenever I feel like it’s a little more difficult to run my fingers through my hair in the shower, so once or twice a month. I also leave it on for longer than the suggested ten minutes – I quickly wash my hair once to remove excess oil and dry shampoo residue, gently wring out as much water as I can, and apply the Olaplex root to tip. I leave it on for maybe two or three hours while I do stuff around the house or watch something on Netflix. It’s important to shampoo afterward too!

What you like about the product

It’s the only hair mask I’ve tried that actually repairs the hair shaft so the nourishing effects are still noticeable a few washes after application. My hair looks and feels a lot healthier and less damaged, so I need less recent haircuts despite my balayage treatment.

How you found it

It seems like everyone was talking about Olaplex last year, and for good reason.

Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Light Wand in Goldgasm

How often you use it

Whenever I wear a little more makeup than usual, especially if my skin is looking dull.

What you like about the product

I’ve suffered from dry skin for a minute, but last summer was downright intolerable. My skin looked red, angry, and more flaky than that friend who cancels plans when you’re about to call your Uber. When I tried this product on at a Chestnut Hill Bloomingdale’s, everything just seemed to calm down. I wore it home and Facetimed a friend and I just stared at my glowy cheekbones the whole time. My sad dry skin suddenly looked revitalized. I also love how natural the Glowgasm shade looks! It truly gives the illusion of perfect skin.

How you found it

I’ve followed Charlotte Tilbury on Instagram for a few years and it’s one of my dreams to have my makeup done by her. Every look is an absolute dream. I finally pulled the trigger on this product after seeing @milki.milki.milki, a really cool pair of Pakistani girls, rave about it on their blog.

Retin A 0.025% (mine is Janssen-Cilag, but I imagine others work well as long as the component is the same – tretinoin)

How often you use it

I use this product 1-2 times a week, mixed into my moisturizer. I have very dry sensitive skin that has been damaged in the past due to improper retinoid use, so I’m being very careful not to overdo it.

What you like about the product

You can’t beat the OG HG. Retin A has been around forever – it’s the most well-researched vitamin A derivative and the results are evident. When I apply it, I consistently wake up with a reduced pore appearance and a more even complexion. It’s also the only product (along with SPF!) with proven anti-aging properties. I can’t wait until my skin grows to tolerate it so I can start applying it more regularly.

How you found it

As mentioned, I tried an over the counter retinoid a couple of years ago that absolutely *murdered* my skin’s moisture barrier, so I was terrified of ever trying the component again. My sister promised me I would be amazed if I used Retin A correctly, and gifted me with her expired tube. It still worked well, but was just a bit weaker. I loved it and haven’t looked back.

How often you use it

I use this product every time I wash my hair. I apply this product when I get out of the shower, while my hair is still damp. After I apply this product, I either let my hair air-dry, or I use a blow dryer. This product enhances my naturally-curly hair, and also makes it super easy to style if I want to switch up my look.

What you like about the product

Saints & Sinners Velvet Divine Leave-In Conditioner leaves my hair feeling incredibly moisturized and healthy. A small amount of this product goes a long way, and helps eliminate frizz and makes it easier to style my hair! The product is actually a thick cream, but can be sprayed as a mist. It is also free of sulfates and parabens, harmful ingredients that are present in most hair care products: I try to haircare products that have the best ingredients, but I have found that it is rare to find a product that uses quality ingredients AND performs the way I want it to. I also change my hair a ton! I have had extensions, my hair is naturally curly (but also thermally damaged because I style it so much), and I also color my hair quite often. Regardless of my hair style or condition, Saints & Sinners products leave my hair feeling repaired and restored.

How you found it

(Shameless plug) Saints & Sinners Haircare is actually a company my family owns! My mom, a licensed cosmetologist, formulated all the products after discovering a gap in the market- so many hair care products perform well, but only because they use poor ingredients. Conversely, the hair care products that use healthy ingredients tend to under-perform. Saints & Sinners Haircare uses the best ingredients but also does it’s job in making your hair look AND feel its best. This is the only haircare that I use.

How often you use it

I use this product to complete my makeup look. Adding a shiny lip is on trend right now, and I love using it with a simple day-to-day look (simple eyeshadow, light makeup, etc…). I really love this product for a spring and summer look, since it’s super light but adds just enough pigment to look somewhat natural.

What you like about the product

This product doesn’t dry out my lips (if anything, it is super moisturizing! It uses an ingredient called cherry oil, which actually protects against drying), and it lasts a really long time! It’s not sticky at all, and it adds a lot of shine and dimension. I love how it’s tinted too, my favorite shade is ‘rosewood,’ as it naturally brings out the color of my lips! I love wearing it with a champagne colored eyeshadow and light contour. It looks super natural but it also makes your lips pop!

How you found it

I go shopping with my sorority sisters quite a bit. My friend, Liz Castellano (who has the BIGGEST makeup addiction I have ever seen), actually recommended it! I love shopping with friends: it has taken a lot of trial and error to find a lip gloss that I consistently use, so it is super helpful to get opinions and recommendations from your friends who are also going through the same trial and error process.

How often you use it

I use this product in the morning and night, after washing my face. I like to use a toner first, and then I apply this serum (I use a roller to make sure it is absorbed into my skin) and follow it with a moisturizer!

What you like about the product

This product makes my skin texture look soooooo much more even! It also makes my skin look (and feel) super healthy. I spend a lot of time outside and in the sun during the summer months, so using this product has made my tan look so much better. I have also found that it has helped prevent acne: my skin is super sensitive so it is hard to find products that actually work that don’t irritate my skin. I also really like this product because it is free of a lot of the harmful ingredients you would find in a lot of other beauty products (parabens and sulfates, for example).

I have sensitive skin so it was great to find a cleanser that gently cleans and exfoliates. My skin feels super soft and moisturized after. It is really easy to foam and calming to use particularly before bed. The mainly plant-based ingredients naturally protect my skin from so many different things, making this a great all in one product.

I use samples when I travel as a way to not only try new products, but pack light. When I got a sample of this cleanser, I ended up using it even after my trips. I was squeezing every last bit out of that container and lucky for me, only a small amount is needed each time so it lasted long enough for me to buy a full tube.

#2 Favorite Beauty Product

How often you use it

Typically any morning before I leave my apartment. For the beach, I typically alternate between this and a stronger face sunscreen.

What you like about the product

I don’t like to wear makeup everyday, so this is a great product for more natural coverage. It also has great sun protection (which is super important all year round) without clogging your skin like other creams with SPF.

How you found it

I was recommended this by the place I go to get facials. They said it is great for everyday protection from sun exposure and minimizes acne.

#3 Favorite Beauty Product

How often you use it

All the time – In the morning I will put a little on my lips and eyelids to make sure I am moisturized. I had a friend who would even use it as a highlighter on her cheekbones. During winter nights, I will lather a bit more on any dry spots of my skin.

What you like about the product

My lips can get very dry and cracked in the winter, so it has always been a great solution that is quick & reliable. A friend also shared with me that Aquaphor is great for preventing wrinkles because of the level of hydration it provides skin, so I use a little around my eyes when it feels dry. If you have some in warmer settings, the product takes on a more liquid consistency similar to an oil or serum. I prefer this because it makes it easy to get a more glossy look, while also using less product each time.

How you found it

It has always sat somewhere in the medicine cabinet since I was little. My parents would use it for my sensitive skin as a kid and I found that it’s an affordable solution to maintain good hydrated skin.

Stay tuned for next week’s post where my friends Aliona Zamarin, Gacy Tanoesoedibjo, and Rose Dexter share their three beauty favorites!

FENTY Skin Review with Chelsea Cates-Rollins

Breaking down the products behind Rihanna’s newest business success: skin care.

Photos taken from Fenty Beauty Website

It goes without saying that Rihanna has been taking retail by storm, redefining industry norms and playing by her own rules: FENTY rules. First Rihanna made waves with FENTY Beauty, providing an incredible 40 shade range foundation- along with some other pretty amazing products. The company’s diverse range of products landed its rightful place on Time Magazine’s 25 best inventions of 2017 and even sparked major beauty retailers, such as L’Oréal, to begin selling and marketing deeper cosmetic shades for woman of color. Next it was Savage X FENTY, a lingerie company, which again emphasized inclusivity, showcasing a range of skin tones and sizes for women of all colors and shapes. After lingerie, Rihanna was after the rest of the body with her FENTY fashion brand. FENTY was released under the LVMH group, making Rihanna the first woman and woman of color ever to create a fashion brand with LVMH. Now, Rihanna is after skincare with FENTY Skin, having recently premiered 3 products in its new line. I had the privilege to speak with my good friend Chelsea Cates-Rollins who was able to get her hands on these highly sought after products. Chelsea, take it away!

(Make sure to scroll to the bottom of this post to see Chelsea’s full video review as well!)

Chelsea, tell us a little about yourself and for how long you have been a beauty enthusiast?

I am 23 years old and currently working in NYC in digital media after graduating from Babson College in 2018. I have always been into anything and everything beauty – hair, nails, makeup etc. My earliest memory is playing in my moms makeup when I was 10 years old and taking a picture, I thought was so cute at the time, but definitely cringe worthy now.

What made you want to purchase Rihanna’s FENTY Skin products?

I LOVE Rihanna, I’m pretty sure if you ask any of my friends they would tell you the same. When she first came out with Fenty Beauty I bought one of their first products, which was the Gloss Bomb and loved it! After that I said “if Rihanna comes out with a skincare line I’ll buy it” and lo and behold she did and I bought it.

Can you give us a quick rundown of each product and your initial impressions?

She came out with 3 products in her first launch and, before I go into detail, one of those was a Sunscreen, which I appreciated especially coming from a Black woman. Specifically, in the Black community applying sunscreen isn’t normalized and I think that was a great first addition to the line. Now going into my overall first impressions…

Screen Shot 2020-08-23 at 4.42.22 PM

Cleanser (rating: 9/10)

The cleanser suds up really well and gives your face a fresh clean feeling without drying it out which is amazing!! The only reason I didn’t give this a full 10/10 is because although it smells great, fragrance can be harsh for a lot of people’s skin so that eliminates a few candidates. And, although the packaging is great for travel because it is a twist cap, a bit of the cleanser dries up on the cap and touches whatever surface you put it on which can also be a bit harmful for people with sensitive skin.

Screen Shot 2020-08-23 at 4.42.37 PM

“Fat Water” a.k.a Toner (rating: 9/10)

Similar to the cleanser, it’s just the packaging that deducts that one point, mainly because it is a bit harder of a plastic and you can accidentally use too much product pushing (which I have done….multiple times). Other than that, I love the Fat Water and I actually see a physical difference, mainly in the amount of oil my face accumulates. I have combination skin, but it’s more oily than dry and since this is a pore refining toner it doesn’t help get rid of large pores, but definitely helps shrink them a.k.a less oil on your face throughout the day!!

Screen Shot 2020-08-23 at 4.43.04 PM

Sunscreen SPF 30 (rating: 10/10)

And finally the sunscreen, my favorite honestly. I love this stuff! It does have a bit of fragrance so sensitive skin people be warned, but it’s not overwhelming. It smells great, isn’t greasy, you don’t need to use a lot of product, and the bottle is reusable! So, anytime you need a refill you only need to purchase the inside portion with the actual product. This is probably my favorite packaging because of that, and it also travels well. A lot of people use this as a moisturizer, which it technically is based on the name,  but I personally still use a moisturizer and add this on top as my sunscreen.

What is your favorite product out of the collection and why?

I already brought this up, but definitely the sunscreen! I do like all the products and I have seen a difference in my skin, but the sunscreen is really my favorite. Not only because it looks great, smells great, and feels great, but because it’s promoting more people to protect their skin from the sun and I love that!

How do these products compare to the skin care products that you already own?

I dibble and dabble in a lot of different products, but since quarantine i’ve been doing a bit more research trying to understand things and I do enjoy these products better. I still use my other serums in my routine, but I haven’t yet switched back to my old cleanser, toner, and sunscreen. Will I? Not sure maybe, it’s only been about a week and a half since I started using Fenty Skin, so time will tell. For now though, I am going to stick to using Fenty Skin. I think there are a lot of comparable products, but in the end it’s all about what you believe your skin needs and listening to it when a product it doesn’t agree with your skin.

Are these products worth their price?

I for sure think these are worth the price!! Skin care is generally expensive if you’re going for more high end products and I have paid more for other skin care products than I have for these, i’ll admit. So if you’re looking for a bit more of an upscale product, you won’t break the bank, but this isn’t your standard drug store skin products (and nothing wrong with your typical drugstore products I use them too), but compared to a Drunk Elephant, Youth to the People, or other similar to this, Fenty Skin is definitely more affordable!

Are these products something you can see yourself using every day and replacing your old products with?

Yes for sure! I already replaced my old everyday products for these and I use these products day and night, besides the sunscreen I only use that during the day. Overall, these products aren’t harsh, do not try out your skin, and are super easy to incorporate into your everyday life busy or not.

Last question. What are your overall final impressions of Rihanna’s skin care debut and do you think her line competes with other popular brands, such as Kylie Skin, The Ordinary, and Glossier?

In all honesty I haven’t tried Kylie Skin or Glossier, but I moved from The Ordinary toner (which I loved and still do love) to the Fat Water Toner. I really like Fat Water Toner, mainly because I saw a difference in my pores after the first night I used it. I still use my ordinary serums in my everyday routine and I still use my drug store Ceerave moisturizer and aloe vera gel, but for the products that did get replaced by Rihanna’s products I will miss, but at the moment don’t plan on going back.

Five Ways Rimowa has Re-imagined Itself

Alexandre Arnault’s re-imagination of a classic brand: Rimowa.

Photos taken from Rimowa’s Instagram Account

The Retail and Luxury Goods Conference at Harvard Business School (HBS) has always been an event that I look forward to every year. I come away from the conference having learned so much from the esteemed panel of speakers HBS invites and a notebook full of insights from the event. This year, the conference’s keynote speaker was Rimowa‘s CEO and President Alexandre Arnault. At just 26 years old, Arnault became the CEO of Rimowa in 2017, when the company was taken in by the LVMH group. Despite being acquired at a lofty €800 million valuation, Arnault had his work cut out for him in transforming a classic luggage brand into a modern item for Millenial and Gen Z consumers. In just three years, Arnault has completely reimagined the company, while still retaining its core identity in superior luggage craftsmanship and design. So, what has Arnault done and how has he done it? In his keynote speech, Arnault addressed a few critical decisions he made which have helped Rimowa become even more successful in the 21st-century retail marketplace.

1) New Leadership Style

Throughout his presentation, Arnault stressed the fact that he wanted to transform the brand’s internal identity from a traditional corporate management system to operating like a start-up. First, he emphasized the importance of everyone within the company identifying as a team, using “we, not I”. This group mentality allows for every stakeholder to take ownership of the successes and failures of the business as a whole. This attitude also helps to instill greater collaboration, unity, and trust within company culture. Arnault also implemented the practice of “engage. disagree. commit.,” meaning that decisions within the company are allowed to be challenged and disagreed upon, however, once a decision has been made, everyone must commit fully to its implementation. Similarly, this practice helps to focus and motivate employees towards a common goal, despite differences of opinion. The three other targets Arnault focuses on are “move fast and light, be design driven, and embrace the unknown,” core goals clearly tied to the Rimowa brand.

2) New Products and Collaborations

One of Arnault’s most defining features to the outside world is his age- at only 26 years old, Arnault began leading over a half a billion-dollar company. However, Arnault’s age just might be his greatest benefit. Arnault has the ability to understand the current and next generation of consumers. It was this insight that motivated him to increase the number of product launches Rimowa has per year. Rimowa’s number of new launches per year went from 8 in 2016 to a staggering 28 in 2019 per year. Rimowa has partnered with high-end and exclusive brands such as Supreme,- whose collaboration sold out in 16 seconds– Dior, and Moncler on these new product releases. Rimowa’s luggage is easily identifiable through design elements, such as its ribbed exterior shell, hard casing, and signature wheels. Therefore, this luggage provides a blank canvas for collaborating designers to express their own brand’s uniqueness, while still ensuring consumers know its a Rimowa product first and foremost- a clear win-win for both parties.

3) Revamped Brand Identity, but Retained Differentiator

Rimowa also went through a complete rebranding, some major changes being a redesigned logo, a new website, and a new slew of brand ambassadors, such as tennis star Roger Federer and the top model Adwoa Aboah. These changes have helped communicate a message to the world that Rimowa is now on the cutting edge and you should be paying attention. One thing that Arnault has made sure not to tamper with, however, is Rimowa’s classic design and craftsmanship, which is what retains the company’s true brand value. You can easily tell a Rimowa piece of luggage coming down the luggage shoot from any other black canvas rollie being churned out.

4) Celebrity Endorsementsscreen-shot-2020-08-23-at-3.27.24-pm

Along with Rimowa’s new face has come new endorsers of the brand. Huge celebrities like basketball player LeBron James, Louis Vuitton’s artistic director Virgil Abloh, and Chef Nobu Matsuhisa, to name a few, have jumped on board in representing the company. The diversity in these high-achieving celebrities is especially key, demonstrating the luggage’s appeal to just about everyone who can dream big. Arnault notes that his focus on marketing, and especially social efforts, has paid off, given that their Instagram account has grown from having 38,000 followers in 2016 to 402,000 in 2019. What was once seen as an expensive piece of luggage is now a marker of adventure, status, achievement, and much more.

5) Labor and Distribution Changes

Lastly, Arnault notes that it was the major restructuring that took place that helped the company achieve significant gains within the retail marketplace. In terms of labor, Rimowa cut the number of people required for production and reallocated jobs to retail services, as a result of the company opening 77 new stores over the past 3 years. Additionally, a drastic evolution in their business model, going from uncontrolled wholesale to a precise retail operation, is one way the company achieved more financial stability. Arnault saw that the company needed greater control over their product and restructured its channel mix, providing only 25% of its product to wholesale compared to 75% previously, increasing retail distribution to 68% from 25%, and increasing e-commerce sales to 7% from 0%. Changes to the labor and channel mix have definitely paid off, resulting in an increase in annual revenue from 443 million in 2016 to 455 million in 2019.

All things considered, it will be interesting to see what Rimowa’s next move is in adapting to the retail challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic has raised. With traveling being drastically reduced and normal jet setting taking a pause, spending on luggage in the foreseeable future will take a major decline. Yet, one way Rimowa has shown to be adapting to the limitations of such a niche product is through product differentiation, having recently launched its own eyewear range. Looking back on all of the flexibility Rimowa displayed and changes it has been able to make over the past few years, although the future seems uncertain, I hope Rimowa is here to stay- and I think it will be.

The information and numbers shown in this article are derived from the keynote slides presented at the HBS Conference.

CEO Sit Down: Jesse Selchow on Stevies General Store

Jesse Selchow’s new company born from tie-dye dreams.

In the chaos and idleness that quarantine can bring, many people have utilized newfound time to turn their hobbies into businesses. My friend Jesse Selchow is one of them, who has been transforming vintage finds into up-cycled tie-dye pieces. I sat down with Stevies General Store‘s CEO Jesse Selchow to learn more about how she turned her passion for tie-dye into a business over the past few months.

Jesse, tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi! I’m Jesse. I grew up in the midwest with hippie parents, so tie-dye was something I saw a lot of when I was a kid. I have worked in the fashion industry for over ten years, and have dabbled in everything from styling to model casting, to eventually becoming an event producer for luxury brands.

How did Stevies General Store start and why recycled clothing turned tie-dye chic?

I have always had a love for vintage! With the world in its current state, no one is doing events so I found myself with extra time on my hands. I started brainstorming how I could combine my enthusiasm for hunting recycled clothing with a new hobby of tie-dye and turn it into a creative outlet.

Personally, has starting this business helped you to manage the COVID-19 quarantine currently present throughout the United States?

Definitely. It has been a blessing to find the feeling of productivity, even amongst the chaos surrounding the world. Keeping busy was really important for me to stay sane.

What is something you look for when finding clothing to recycle and revamp?

I have an affinity for 80’s era clothing, especially when I am looking to up-cycle. I always thought the retro 80’s graphics were really cool, and turning that into something new has been exciting.

What has been the most unexpected challenge in starting your e-commerce Instagram business?

The most unexpected challenge has definitely been the time it took to get the style and aesthetic of the brand ready to show the world. The possibilities are endless when identifying your style and, to me, continuity is the most important part of a brand.

What has been the most fun part of starting your new business?

Experimenting with colors and dying techniques has been really fun, especially on vintage items that already have a certain style to them. Surprisingly, I also found enjoyment doing the photoshoots for Instagram. I hate having my photo taken, however, we managed to find a playful way to do it that made it feel like I’m not taking myself too seriously which is ultimately what the overall project is about.

What new skills have you learned in starting Stevies General Store?

I have learned a lot of tie-dye techniques that I had never tried before and lately I started experimenting with ice dying which I am going to focus on for home goods such linen napkins and placemats.

Last question, if you could tie-dye any clothing piece- from past, present, future, you name it- what would it be?

I would love to die a vintage gown- ideally an organza or taffeta dress with big sleeves and a bow. Probably a vintage Yves Saint Laurent or Valentino from the 70’s or 80’s.

3 Friends Picking their Top 3 Beauty Items Part III

The 3 beauty products 3 of my friends swear by.

It seems as though the friends and suggestions never end! I am so lucky to have such a diverse and dynamic set of close friends who are interested in everything from blow dryers to skin care to lipstick. I love talking with my friends about their latest finds, having them dig through their drawers to share with me their favorites or put on a “haul” for me of what just came in the mail. Thank you for putting up with me and fielding all of my beauty questions pals. (Stay tuned next week for three more friends and three more finds!)

How often you use it

I have been using this face wash every night for the last 2 years. I like to use their Treatment Enzyme Exfoliating Powder Cleanser together with their face wash three times a week, or when I am wearing heavy makeup, or when my face is feeling particularly dirty (usually in the summer when I tend to feel and get very sweaty). This combination leaves my face feeling super clean and soft. The trick is to let the enzyme cleanser sit on your face for about a minute after massaging it in for 60 seconds, this really allows the enzymes to eat away at the dead skin. I also try to massage the cleanser into my face for 60 seconds but sometimes I get lazy or am in a rush.

What you like about the product

It gets my face clean without drying it out, it is super gentle and hydrating, and it also smells amazing. Normally, items that have a fragrance irritate my skin but this doesn’t.

How you found it

I was looking for a new everyday cleanser for a while and a friend of mine who I consult with on virtually anything I buy recommended it to me. She had gotten a trial sample for free, loved it, and ended up buying it (along with the whole product line), so I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed.

#2 Favorite Beauty Product

How often you use it

I use it on my blemishes as soon as I spot them, I dab a bit on with my finger (you can use a q-tip), and it dries it right up. I usually use it at night, it’s the last thing I put on my face when I am getting ready to go to bed. Be careful not to use too much and not to get it too close to your eyes, I made this mistake one too many times. It stings!

What you like about the product

All you need is a little bit, use it a couple of days, like 2 or 3, depending on the size of your blemish, and the blemish pretty much disappears without a trace.

How you found it

Reading hundreds of online reviews on how to get rid of a blemish fast, haha.

How often you use it

I use this every day in the morning all year round. When I know that I will be out in the direct sunlight all day, I will swap this out for Avene Reflexe Solaire 50+.

What you like about the product

Sunscreen is tricky for people with a darker complexion, most tend to leave a white cast. I try to look for a sunscreen that won’t make me look ashy, and with the Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer SPF 15, I am moisturizing and protecting myself from the sun.

How you found it

My favorite Instagrammer, Melissa’s Wardrobe, recommended this product. She always recommends the best stuff. She has a hashtag #melmademedoit, anything she recommends on her stories usually sells out fast. Also, her stories are HILARIOUS, literally watch them like a t.v show, check her out! So yeah, she recommended it and I tried it and loved it. I have been using it every morning for the last 3 years? Maybe longer.

Every day

What you like about the product

It’s an amazing serum for the hair. Whether you have curly, straight, or wazy, all hair types can benefit. It adds shine, softness, and makes your hair look and feel healthier. Definitely a ride or die product.

How you found it

I was searching for a hair oil, and I saw this one got great reviews. I have also loved the brand KERASTASE, as I prefer salon-quality products for my hair. I bought it and fell in love, and it has always been a product I repurchase.

How often you use it

I use it every time I wear makeup.

What you like about the product

Everything about this product is amazing. The pigmentation, blendability, shade range, and finish are incredible. As someone of color, it can be difficult to find a bronzer deep enough, and with a warm undertone. ABH’s have bronzers for all skin tones, and this product can be used in multiple ways and is fantastic all around.

How you found it

I was shopping in Sephora, and ABH is my all-time favorite brand, so I went over to look, and I saw they just released their bronzers. I decided to buy one, and it became one of my cult favorites.

How often you use it

Every time I want to style my hair (about 1 to 2x week)

What you like about the product

I love this product because it is so easy to use, and non-damaging on your hair. As someone with thick, coarse hair, blow-drying normally takes forever, and it takes a lot of effort to smooth your hair in the process. With the Dyson, it is extremely powerful, yet gentle on their hair, making the process fast, and leaving your hair look great.

How you found it

When Dyson’s first hair dryer launched in 2016, it quickly grew and received hype as Dyson entered the hair industry. I held off buying it for a while because I didn’t think the price point was justified. However, I quickly got sick of my current blow-dryer and decided to purchase it.

Dr. Jart moisturizer in the morning & the Rose cream at night

What you like about the product

The Dr. Jart moisturizer is fabulous for the day because it has SPF 30 to protect you from the sun and helps soothe redness. It’s perfect for the days I bravely enable the video feature on Zoom meetings because it provides light coverage. I like the Rose cream because it’s very hydrating and you will wake up looking like a glowing bébé.

How you found it

I found the Dr. Hauschka Rose Cream just perusing Whole Foods and the Dr. Jart cream was recommended to me by a blessed Sephora employee.

Whenever I wash my hair

What you like about the product

The Seanik shampoo bar gives the hair great volume but Lush also sells other types that cater to a wide variety of hair goals. There is no plastic packaging and you can just store the bars in a metal tin which is a good way to reduce some waste in your personal care routine. I love the Briogeo conditioner primarily because I have curly hair and the product is very rich and moisturizing. As an added bonus, it smells like a tropical island paradise and is vegan, cruelty-free and deemed “clean” by Sephora’s standards. These two are just a brilliant pairing.

How you found it

I learned about the shampoo bars from a friend and heard about Briogeo through a podcast! The founder Nancy Twine just did another podcast episode for “How I Built This” & I highly recommend listening to her story!

Retail Designed Differently with Italic

Providing over 800 quality goods from the same manufacturers as designer brands. Could it get any better? How about zero mark-ups.

Photos taken from Italic’s Instagram and Website

Italic is a company that has been taking e-commerce by storm recently, so it’s no surprise that the company has been getting a lot of buzz from media outlets like Fast Company, Business Insider, and Men’s Health. Italic is approaching direct to consumer buying, customer interactions, and brand management in unique ways, which sets it apart from other direct to consumer companies such as Warby Parker and Glossier.

Italic first launched in 2018 by Jeremy Cai, who started the company after receiving a Thiel Fellowship and $100,000, which required him to drop out of college, move to San Francisco, and pursue starting his company for two years. Italic differentiates itself within the retail industry, given its promise of wholesale prices from the same manufacturers as designer brands without any markups, an idea worth $13 million in venture capital funding. The company features over 800 luxury items for incredibly low prices, a sure disruption- or at least a rude awakening- for consumers who are used to spending an arm and a leg for almost an identical Prada bag. Italic plays a crucial role in unveiling the high margins that luxury brands are making a huge profit from. However, brand logos and trademark patterns do have their place in retail, given consumer culture’s desire for easily recognized designer items to flaunt to the world. Luxury brands like Goyard, Louis Vuitton, and Gucci have become extremely successful on this very premise. Yet, what about purchasing on the basis of pure quality?

Screen Shot 2020-08-13 at 3.12.05 PM

There is no doubt that consumers are doing more research as to where their products are coming from, company sustainability efforts, fair labor practices, and product durability. A longer-lasting, high-quality product has become more of a priority to today’s consumer, allowing for Italic to fill a void in the marketplace- moderately priced, high-value items with full transparency. To Italic, it’s all about style, function, and quality, which Italic is surely delivering and without the price tag.

Considering current trends in consumer behavior, Italic is incredibly smart for making the core of its mission very transparent to its consumer. According to McKinsey’s ‘True Gen’: Generation Z and its implications for companies report, Gen Z consumers “increasingly expect brands to ‘take a stand’” when it comes to brand ethos. The consumer report specifies that it has found that a brand would benefit from choosing “specific topics (or causes) that make sense for a brand and its consumers and to have something clear to say about those particular issues. In a transparent world, younger consumers don’t distinguish between the ethics of a brand, the company that owns it, and its network of partners and suppliers”. For Italic, transparency is so key, which makes its side by side comparison of prices, and highlighting the high-end brands that use its same manufacturers refreshing and alluring. To shoppers, it is evident that Italic takes a clear stance.

Italic’s close connection to its customers also makes the company stand out. It was only the other day that I was scrolling through Instagram when I found a post from Italic asking “What products do you want us to develop?” with a flurry of responses underneath from Italic fans asking for everything from skincare to furniture. This is just one example of how the company’s openness and eagerness for consumer input have allowed Italic to grow and thrive among the crowded e-commerce marketplace. I don’t know about you, but I cannot wait to see what Italic comes up with next.

Photos taken from Italic’s Instagram

You can get in on all of the retail therapy Italic has to offer by purchasing a monthly subscription for $8.33 per month, adding up to just $100 a year. It is also worth noting that more than 90% of Italic’s customers breakeven on their first order- the best deal of 2020 I’ve seen so far. So, what are you waiting for? The future of fashion is calling.

Here are some of my favorite items Italic is selling right now:

1. Recycled Terry Cropped Hoodie 2. Slumber Cotton Poplin Pajama Set 3. Cashmere Hoodie 4. Laight Short Puffer 5. Point Dume Cateye Sunglasses 6. Comrade Nylon Backpack 7. Niki Leather Moto Jacket 8. Bowery Teddy Jacket 9. Diamond Pave Huggie Hoop Earring 10. Casey Cashmere Scarf 11. Miles Cashmere Travel Blanket and Eyemask Set 12.Vacuum Insulated Water Bottle

3 Friends Picking their Top 3 Beauty Items Part II

The 3 beauty products 3 of my friends swear by.

There is a well known saying that goes “you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with;” if only the same applied to my makeup bag- I’d have one incredible collection then! My friends have been an unlimited source of beauty knowledge and tips to me. Having spent so much time around them, I began asking myself questions like “do I need a jade roller?”, “should I switch to a silk pillowcase?”, and even “do I need a Sephora rewards account?”, thoughts I never considered would have ever crossed my mind. Where would I be without them!? Probably severely unmoisturized at this point. Lucky for you I have pulled together three more friends and three more favorites for you to check out! (Stay tuned next week for three more friends and three more finds!)

Every time I need my dark circles and the scars on my face covered. My makeup is incomplete without this.

What you like about the product

It has excellent coverage and can cover the darkest of spots and discoloration with very little product. A little goes a long way as it has great pigmentation. It does not dry the skin too much and also provides extra SPF. I feel like this is the only concealer that hides my extremely dark circles without giving it an ashy look.

How you found it

I started using this first year of college, I found about this trick in a MAC store in Hyderabad, India the makeup artist told me to always use different concealer colours for my dark circles and my spots, which has been a game-changer. He recommended I use a reddish undertone pot concealer for my under eyes and a yellowish undertone pot concealer for scars on my face. I have been doing this since and I love it.

I’ve heard about it before and just wanted to try it out once. I have been using it to this day.
