3 Friends Picking their Top 3 Beauty Items Part V

The 3 beauty products 3 of my friends swear by.

Throughout my life, friends have always been the most important to me. For any friend of mine, I would stop everything to be by their side and I know that some of my closest friends would always do the same. Through my friends, I have been able to learn about different cultures and perspectives, how people approach different situations, how different people chose to spend their time, and everything in between. With every friend, I have learned something about myself too. What I value, why I am different, how I want to be, where I want to spend my time- the list goes on. That is the beauty in having true friendships, there is an unspeakable harmony in two people who are so incredibly different, sharing time and growing alongside one another. Sharing beauty tips is great, but it is only an infinitely small part of why I love my friends. (Stay tuned for next weeks 3 friends and 3 picks).

Bioderma Sensibio H2O

How often you use it

Every morning and night

What you like about the product

It does an amazing job at cleansing the skin/ taking off makeup, yet is very gentle and hydrating.

How you found it

I’ve been using it for 10 years! My dermatologist recommended it to me when I was 13 (I would get allergic reactions from most other products I used on my skin back then). As soon as I started using it my skin completely transformed and I’ve been loyal to this product since.

How often you use it

Whenever I wear makeup (almost everyday)

What you like about the product

It’s one of those your-skin-but-better products. This powder does an amazing job at evening out my skin tone without being visible or cakey on the skin.

How you found it

I’ve also been using this product for at least five years, but I’m pretty sure I learned about it from a YouTube influencer a long time ago.

Benefit Gimme Brow+ Volumizing Eyebrow Gel (Shade #3)

How often you use it

Whenever I wear makeup (almost everyday)

What you like about the product

This brow gel makes it super easy and quick to fill in your brows and gives you that natural/ “feathery” brow look

Trial and error – I must have tried every brow product under the sun before I finally found this one!

Lucas Papaw Ointment

How often you use it

I’ve been using this ointment everyday for the past 3 years. I usually apply it on my lips when they’re feeling chapped and even on my face before I apply my makeup. If my skin is feeling extra dry, I also apply the ointment on the areas that need moisture before I go to bed.

What you like about the product

I love this product because it is so compact, I carry it around in my purse when I go out and in my backpack when I go to school. Unlike other lip balms or ointments, this product really keeps my lips and skin moisturized all throughout the day. Because of this pandemic, I’ve been wearing face masks everyday, which often leaves my skin feeling dry. With the help of this product, I’m able to keep my skin moisturized and healthy.

How you found it

After I started college in Boston, I noticed my skin getting a lot drier than usual because of the cold weather. When I raised this issue to my mom, she suggested this product and I’ve been using it religiously ever since.

Revitalash Advanced Eyelash Conditioner & Serum

How often you use it

I use this product once a day, usually before I apply my makeup. Sometimes I use this product at night if I decide to not wear makeup that day.

What you like about the product

I love this product because I can really see a difference in my eyelashes after using it regularly. I’ve tried other eyelash serums before Revitalash, and I noticed little to no difference in my eyelashes. Since I wear eyelash extensions, my lashes carry more weight than natural lashes so it is important for me to keep them strong and healthy. After using this product, I noticed my natural lashes growing longer and thicker, which also prevents my extensions from falling off too easily.

How you found it

After complaining about how easily my lashes fall off to my lash technician, she suggested this product and guaranteed that I would see results. Needless to say she was definitely right.

Brow Wiz by Anastasia Beverly Hills

How often you use it

I use this product every time I leave my house. When I don’t feel like putting on a full face of makeup, I just use this product on my eyebrows and it makes me feel and look so much more confident.

What you like about the product

I love this product because it is so easy to use. The texture is waxy, so I’m able to create lighter brows by using the eyebrow pencil with a light hand, yet I’m also able to create darker brows by applying this product with a little more pressure. This product lasts all day, is easy to use, and is my absolute favorite makeup product of all time.

How you found it

I’ve seen a lot of beauty influencers on Youtube and Instagram use this product when I was in high school, but I was never able to get my hands on them as they weren’t sold in Indonesia yet. It wasn’t until college was I able to finally purchase this product, and I’ve been loving it ever since.

Ultimate Arch Definer & Clear Brow Gloss by BBB London

How often you use it

Every day!

What you like about the product

Having tried MANY different brow pencils, brushes, etc, I found this one and would never use anything else…it’s AMAZING. The arch definer is the best at building a very natural look that matches the colour of my eyebrows (which are a strange in between colour), plus has a great little brush at the end to blend it in. The gloss is also so great and creates a great shape that holds in place literally all day. I sometimes just do my eyebrows and nothing else as it makes such a significant difference to my look.

How often you use it

Every evening before bed

What you like about the product

It makes your skin look and feel amazing and glowing. When I started using this in my skincare routine I never received so many compliments on the condition of my skin. It’s also SO cheap compared to other similar products which you pay for all the packaging and marketing on.

Liquidlast Eyeliner – Brown or Pointblack by MAC

How often you use it

Usually everyday but in lockdown times only when I’m seeing people !

What you like about the product

My eyes are quite sensitive and also water a lot,  and my face doesn’t seem to like make up staying on all day (!! It slides off my face instantly!). I’ve tried so SO many different liquid eyeliners, including more expensive ones, and nothing stays on like the MAC one.  It doesn’t budge whatsoever, even if swimming or whatever.

How you found it

I can’t remember! I’ve been using it for years and years… I think from just trying and testing different eyeliners.

Investing Your Time and Money in College featuring James Cheng

Saving when you’re a young adult can be tough, but it doesn’t have to be.

I have always been vigilant when it comes to my personal finances. I am fascinated by the concept of investing and having your money work for you, where saving now can amount to incredible future wealth. This knowledge and understanding, however, did not come to me overnight. I have a college degree in business, where I took finance and accounting classes, and a father who works in the finance industry, who I poke for clarifications and explanations about nearly everything! I have found this knowledge to serve me well, especially in college, where I was able to grow my personal wealth through investing, saving, and earning money through internships, part-time work during breaks, and my job at our college library. I wanted to share the information that I learned and knew that my good friend James, a fellow Babson College graduate, would be an excellent person to contribute advice on the matter. James is one of the savviest people I know, who has turned his interest in finance and investing into a full-time job as an investment portfolio analyst at Wells Fargo in Charlotte, North Carolina.

When coming to Babson, James’ initial interest was not in finance, but rather entrepreneurship. Yet, when James took Principles Finance with Professor Bliss he was instantly hooked. Principles of Finance was the first class that James took that he found to be really challenging and related to a subject that he did not know much about. James soon took all the finance classes he could register for and quickly became adept in the subject. One of Jame’s favorite aspects of finance is that he can walk into a room with finance professionals and finds that he always learns something new. Although James still desires to start his own business in the future, he is currently focusing on learning all he can about the finance industry, so when the time comes, he’s got the finances covered.

Applying to College

James

Jame’s first piece of advice when applying to college is taking the time to apply for scholarships. If you can get a scholarship your ROI- return on investment– will most likely pay off. For example, if you spend 3 hours on a scholarship application and you earned $5,000 in financial aid assistance, you have essentially made over $1,600 per hour of your time! That’s definitely above the going rate for any entry level job I know of! James also adds that when you are in college you can continue to apply for scholarships and aid to help lower your costs overtime. Every year you can re-engage in a dialogue with your college in order to potentially reduce your cost of college, if they feel you deserve more aid. You can do so by accessing your college’s financial appeal form.

Ursula

In terms of deciding what college will be worth the most bang for your buck, it is also worth checking out the employment rates of the universities you are looking at. This can be found in the yearly reports that the college puts out on its employment statistics. After all, the end goal for seeking higher education, in many cases, is to gain the best employment opportunities. In surveying different options, this might be an important step in your college selection process.

Establishing Credit History

James & Ursula

Jame’s advice is to get a credit card to establish credit history as soon as you can- the earlier the better. You don’t even have to use the credit card, just get one, and make sure that it is under your name so that it can counts toward your credit score. Establishing good credit for a long period of time is important for things like big purchases in the future- think your first car or first apartment rental- because it shows the bank that you are a responsible person to lend money to. Jame’s first credit card was a Wells Fargo credit card for college students with 1% cash rewards and mine was a Fidelity rewards card with 2% unlimited cash back. Learning how to use a credit card early on will also help you long term in learning how to set up automatic payments and budgeting.

Budgeting

James

In terms of budgeting, James believes that a lot of college students could save money by cutting back on excess spending on things like eating out during the week- that $15-$30 adds up! Instead of ordering that pizza 3 times a week, minimizing this spending to 1 time per week and savoring the indulgence can help significantly in the long term. James also stresses the importance of taking advantage of work opportunities, such as work study or part-time work. James and I have definitely put in our time working in college, as James used to work in our college’s fitness center and I in the library. That way, even if you do indulge in a night out or splurge on some new sneakers, having a part-time jobs can offset some of your expenses. Passive income from investing or side hustles can also be great if you are able to seek out these opportunities.

Ursula

One piece of advice that I have learned from my dad is to pay yourself first. After every pay check, it is important to set some money aside for yourself to save or invest before you go out and spend all of your hard earned money at once. Think of it as an investment in yourself and in your future. With more money in your pocket, you can be prepared for anything that comes your way and life can definitely throw you the unexpected when you least expect it.

Investing early

Screen Shot 2020-08-29 at 5.52.07 PM

Photo by Burak K on Pexels.com

James

As soon as James turn 18, he open a ROTH IRA (Individual Retirement Account), which is what he recommends you do too! Some benefits from opening this account are that it is tax free, you can contribute to it regularly, and you can save significantly overtime. Whatever you can put away today, due to compound interest, is going to be worth much more when you enter into retirement. Additionally, if you are an international student, James recommends that you get an on campus job in order to receive a social security number. In getting a social security number, you can gain access to the American banking system to begin investing, saving, and much more.

Ursula

One point that James and I definitely agree on is investing in broad market index funds or exchange traded funds (ETF) over investing in the specific stocks of companies. The reason for this is that passive investing- meaning you invest your money with the forethought of holding for the long term, has historically yielded better results as opposed to active investing- picking and choosing stocks to try to beat the index. Doing this requires an incredible amount of time and energy to do thorough research on when and what to buy and sell. You really have to be an expert in order to be proficient in active investing, which incorporates greater risk in the individual investments.

Invest in Yourself

Invest in yourself, there is no limit to a potential opportunity.
                                                                                                 – James

James

Some of the most important advice James highlights is to invest in yourself first and foremost. James states that you only need one door to open to be successful, so it is crucial to put as many doors in front of yourself as possible. College is what you make of it, so take advantage of all of the resources that are available that are free and can help you develop professionally and personally. James notes going to free conferences, getting his resume reviewed, and hosting all expense paid college gatherings as some of the ways that he was able to maximize his time spent in college.

Ursula

Similar to James, I took advantage of the many opportunities Babson has to offer. Yet, I have learned that the first step in doing so is to really sit down and do some research. You won’t know what opportunities you can seize unless you find out what opportunities are out there! At Babson, I was able to receive grants for studying abroad and hosting parties as well as utilize the free receive career counseling and resume review services offered to every student. There are so many organizations, businesses, universities, and people who are willing to help those who are passionate about learning, so don’t miss out!

Becoming Food Instagram Famous with Michelle Buslov

How Michelle started and grew her food Instagram page to having over 1,700 followers

Photos taken from Michelle’s Instagram

My good friend Michelle and I share many things in common, we both studied abroad together on Babson’s BRIC program, we love finding great deals, and we love food. We both enjoy eating savory dim sum, lobster rolls, and poke bowls on a night out and always make sure to snap a picture before the meal begins- and Michelle definitely has a knack for food photography as you can see above! Over the COVID-19 pandemic’s quarantine period, Michelle decided to turn her food photo skills and passion for new restaurant finds into starting a food focused Instagram account, where she showcases her latest eats. Try to control the drooling as Michelle takes us through how she has achieved such tasty success.

Michelle, tell us a little bit about you.

I just graduated from Babson and am working remote at an e-commerce analytics start up. I recently started a food blog with the handle @bostonfoodie_mish to share and find restaurants in the Boston area!

Why start and food instagram and why now?

I was sitting at home one night until around 3 AM just following food accounts and scrolling through Yelp! looking at new restaurants I wanted to try and it suddenly hit me that I could make one of these accounts myself. I really liked the idea of having my food account separate from my personal account because, instead of spamming my friends with food pictures, I could share them with the foodie community who are really interested in learning about new restaurants and dishes.

What was the most surprising thing you learned about running a food instagram?

I think I was surprised by how engaged and supportive the food community was. If someone likes your page, they will go back and like or comment on a lot of your photos and put in the effort to send you a message about how much they like it. It’s always nice to have an Instagram community where people are building each other up and sharing pictures of something they really love!

What is some advice you would give to someone who is interested in starting a food insta of their own?

I think the number one thing that has helped me has been engaging with other foodies, especially ones that had a lot of followers or had pages that I wanted to use to guide me. Almost like networking and just saying “Hey, I’m new to this, what is some advice you have” because the people who are actually in it and running a successful food Instagram will really know what is necessary to get there. Of course general social media growth applies, but they can give you specific advice to the food industry. Although a lot of people didn’t reply, some big accounts did and they really helped me grow by giving me tips on my photos, hashtags, and how to gain more followers overall. Sometimes they would even repost my content and give me a wider audience!

Screen Shot 2020-08-29 at 11.42.15 AM

What is the biggest challenge in running your page?

The biggest challenge is definitely keeping up with the time commitment associated with having a food blog. Taking time everyday to engage with others and take quality pictures at restaurants can sometimes get tricky with a busy work day, but I think the best way to overcome that is taking it day by day and remembering that this is something I’m doing for fun. If I don’t respond to a comment it’s not the end of the world and everyone understands.

What is the craziest thing that has happened to your food instagram since you started it?

One thing that was kind of crazy was when I got an email inviting me to some foodie event in Boston Common. It was right after a month of having a food Instagram and I wasn’t sure if it was a foodie event. I have my email in my Instagram account but no one had emailed me for foodie reasons so I was really confused. However, I couldn’t find any information about this event on the internet so it seemed like it was a closed event. I emailed back asking if there was a charge for the event. They responded back saying that it was free and that I could bring a friend. I ended up showing up with my boyfriend and it was a foodie event with all this free food and well-known foodies with a lot of followers. I had a little imposter syndrome around all these people with fancy cameras and tens of thousands of followers but it was such a fun experience and I got to try some amazing food from Earl of Sandwich and delicious ice cream from The Tipping Cow Creamery!

What are some food instagrams that inspire you that you follow:

@greenline_eats

@hangrybostonian

@spoon_northeastern

@hungrygirlstofboston

@beantowneater

Do you have any goals or milestones for this fun project?

I definitely have some goals as far as growing followers and featuring restaurants that may be less conventional. I really want to stay authentic and not just post things that I know will get a lot of likes, so posting a diverse set of foods has been super important to me and I hope to add even more types of cuisine.

What are some of your favorite places to eat and take instagram worthy photos of your food?

I would say my favorite place is definitely Gourmet Dumpling House in Chinatown because soup dumplings are AMAZING. As far as cute pics go, Boston Burger Company and Taiyaki NYC have some really aesthetic looking desserts, so I definitely know I can always hit up one of those for unreal pictures!

What are you waiting for? Go follow Michelle!

3 Friends Picking their Top 3 Beauty Items Part IV

The 3 beauty products 3 of my friends swear by.

The best beauty products are like friends: they help us shine, they are always there when times get tough, and they help us feel like our best selves. As someone who did not always feel comfortable wearing make up, my friends have helped me learn about what best products work for me- that help me feel my best and not overshadow who I am. I am so grateful for those who have taken the time to guide me through Sephora or gift me products to help me through my beauty journey. So when the times get tough, I know I have my friends and a touch of Tarte eyeshadow (thanks Jahnvi!) to carry me through the day. (Stay tuned for next week, where I feature more friends and more finds!)

How often you use it

I use this whenever I feel like it’s a little more difficult to run my fingers through my hair in the shower, so once or twice a month. I also leave it on for longer than the suggested ten minutes – I quickly wash my hair once to remove excess oil and dry shampoo residue, gently wring out as much water as I can, and apply the Olaplex root to tip. I leave it on for maybe two or three hours while I do stuff around the house or watch something on Netflix. It’s important to shampoo afterward too!

What you like about the product

It’s the only hair mask I’ve tried that actually repairs the hair shaft so the nourishing effects are still noticeable a few washes after application. My hair looks and feels a lot healthier and less damaged, so I need less recent haircuts despite my balayage treatment.

How you found it

It seems like everyone was talking about Olaplex last year, and for good reason.

Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Light Wand in Goldgasm

How often you use it

Whenever I wear a little more makeup than usual, especially if my skin is looking dull.

What you like about the product

I’ve suffered from dry skin for a minute, but last summer was downright intolerable. My skin looked red, angry, and more flaky than that friend who cancels plans when you’re about to call your Uber. When I tried this product on at a Chestnut Hill Bloomingdale’s, everything just seemed to calm down. I wore it home and Facetimed a friend and I just stared at my glowy cheekbones the whole time. My sad dry skin suddenly looked revitalized. I also love how natural the Glowgasm shade looks! It truly gives the illusion of perfect skin.

How you found it

I’ve followed Charlotte Tilbury on Instagram for a few years and it’s one of my dreams to have my makeup done by her. Every look is an absolute dream. I finally pulled the trigger on this product after seeing @milki.milki.milki, a really cool pair of Pakistani girls, rave about it on their blog.

Retin A 0.025% (mine is Janssen-Cilag, but I imagine others work well as long as the component is the same – tretinoin)

How often you use it

I use this product 1-2 times a week, mixed into my moisturizer. I have very dry sensitive skin that has been damaged in the past due to improper retinoid use, so I’m being very careful not to overdo it.

What you like about the product

You can’t beat the OG HG. Retin A has been around forever – it’s the most well-researched vitamin A derivative and the results are evident. When I apply it, I consistently wake up with a reduced pore appearance and a more even complexion. It’s also the only product (along with SPF!) with proven anti-aging properties. I can’t wait until my skin grows to tolerate it so I can start applying it more regularly.

How you found it

As mentioned, I tried an over the counter retinoid a couple of years ago that absolutely *murdered* my skin’s moisture barrier, so I was terrified of ever trying the component again. My sister promised me I would be amazed if I used Retin A correctly, and gifted me with her expired tube. It still worked well, but was just a bit weaker. I loved it and haven’t looked back.

How often you use it

I use this product every time I wash my hair. I apply this product when I get out of the shower, while my hair is still damp. After I apply this product, I either let my hair air-dry, or I use a blow dryer. This product enhances my naturally-curly hair, and also makes it super easy to style if I want to switch up my look.

What you like about the product

Saints & Sinners Velvet Divine Leave-In Conditioner leaves my hair feeling incredibly moisturized and healthy. A small amount of this product goes a long way, and helps eliminate frizz and makes it easier to style my hair! The product is actually a thick cream, but can be sprayed as a mist. It is also free of sulfates and parabens, harmful ingredients that are present in most hair care products: I try to haircare products that have the best ingredients, but I have found that it is rare to find a product that uses quality ingredients AND performs the way I want it to. I also change my hair a ton! I have had extensions, my hair is naturally curly (but also thermally damaged because I style it so much), and I also color my hair quite often. Regardless of my hair style or condition, Saints & Sinners products leave my hair feeling repaired and restored.

How you found it

(Shameless plug) Saints & Sinners Haircare is actually a company my family owns! My mom, a licensed cosmetologist, formulated all the products after discovering a gap in the market- so many hair care products perform well, but only because they use poor ingredients. Conversely, the hair care products that use healthy ingredients tend to under-perform. Saints & Sinners Haircare uses the best ingredients but also does it’s job in making your hair look AND feel its best. This is the only haircare that I use.

How often you use it

I use this product to complete my makeup look. Adding a shiny lip is on trend right now, and I love using it with a simple day-to-day look (simple eyeshadow, light makeup, etc…). I really love this product for a spring and summer look, since it’s super light but adds just enough pigment to look somewhat natural.

What you like about the product

This product doesn’t dry out my lips (if anything, it is super moisturizing! It uses an ingredient called cherry oil, which actually protects against drying), and it lasts a really long time! It’s not sticky at all, and it adds a lot of shine and dimension. I love how it’s tinted too, my favorite shade is ‘rosewood,’ as it naturally brings out the color of my lips! I love wearing it with a champagne colored eyeshadow and light contour. It looks super natural but it also makes your lips pop!

How you found it

I go shopping with my sorority sisters quite a bit. My friend, Liz Castellano (who has the BIGGEST makeup addiction I have ever seen), actually recommended it! I love shopping with friends: it has taken a lot of trial and error to find a lip gloss that I consistently use, so it is super helpful to get opinions and recommendations from your friends who are also going through the same trial and error process.

How often you use it

I use this product in the morning and night, after washing my face. I like to use a toner first, and then I apply this serum (I use a roller to make sure it is absorbed into my skin) and follow it with a moisturizer!

What you like about the product

This product makes my skin texture look soooooo much more even! It also makes my skin look (and feel) super healthy. I spend a lot of time outside and in the sun during the summer months, so using this product has made my tan look so much better. I have also found that it has helped prevent acne: my skin is super sensitive so it is hard to find products that actually work that don’t irritate my skin. I also really like this product because it is free of a lot of the harmful ingredients you would find in a lot of other beauty products (parabens and sulfates, for example).

365 day & night – the only cleanser you’ll want or ever need to use!

What you like about the product

I have sensitive skin so it was great to find a cleanser that gently cleans and exfoliates. My skin feels super soft and moisturized after. It is really easy to foam and calming to use particularly before bed. The mainly plant-based ingredients naturally protect my skin from so many different things, making this a great all in one product.

How you found it

I use samples when I travel as a way to not only try new products, but pack light. When I got a sample of this cleanser, I ended up using it even after my trips. I was squeezing every last bit out of that container and lucky for me, only a small amount is needed each time so it lasted long enough for me to buy a full tube.

How often you use it

Typically any morning before I leave my apartment. For the beach, I typically alternate between this and a stronger face sunscreen.

What you like about the product

I don’t like to wear makeup everyday, so this is a great product for more natural coverage. It also has great sun protection (which is super important all year round) without clogging your skin like other creams with SPF.

How you found it

I was recommended this by the place I go to get facials. They said it is great for everyday protection from sun exposure and minimizes acne.

How often you use it

All the time – In the morning I will put a little on my lips and eyelids to make sure I am moisturized. I had a friend who would even use it as a highlighter on her cheekbones. During winter nights, I will lather a bit more on any dry spots of my skin.

What you like about the product

My lips can get very dry and cracked in the winter, so it has always been a great solution that is quick & reliable. A friend also shared with me that Aquaphor is great for preventing wrinkles because of the level of hydration it provides skin, so I use a little around my eyes when it feels dry. If you have some in warmer settings, the product takes on a more liquid consistency similar to an oil or serum. I prefer this because it makes it easy to get a more glossy look, while also using less product each time.

How you found it

It has always sat somewhere in the medicine cabinet since I was little. My parents would use it for my sensitive skin as a kid and I found that it’s an affordable solution to maintain good hydrated skin.

FENTY Skin Review with Chelsea Cates-Rollins

Breaking down the products behind Rihanna’s newest business success: skin care.

It goes without saying that Rihanna has been taking retail by storm, redefining industry norms and playing by her own rules: FENTY rules. First Rihanna made waves with FENTY Beauty, providing an incredible 40 shade range foundation- along with some other pretty amazing products. The company’s diverse range of products landed its rightful place on Time Magazine’s 25 best inventions of 2017 and even sparked major beauty retailers, such as L’Oréal, to begin selling and marketing deeper cosmetic shades for woman of color. Next it was Savage X FENTY, a lingerie company, which again emphasized inclusivity, showcasing a range of skin tones and sizes for women of all colors and shapes. After lingerie, Rihanna was after the rest of the body with her FENTY fashion brand. FENTY was released under the LVMH group, making Rihanna the first woman and woman of color ever to create a fashion brand with LVMH. Now, Rihanna is after skincare with FENTY Skin, having recently premiered 3 products in its new line. I had the privilege to speak with my good friend Chelsea Cates-Rollins who was able to get her hands on these highly sought after products. Chelsea, take it away!

(Make sure to scroll to the bottom of this post to see Chelsea’s full video review as well!)

Chelsea, tell us a little about yourself and for how long you have been a beauty enthusiast?

I am 23 years old and currently working in NYC in digital media after graduating from Babson College in 2018. I have always been into anything and everything beauty – hair, nails, makeup etc. My earliest memory is playing in my moms makeup when I was 10 years old and taking a picture, I thought was so cute at the time, but definitely cringe worthy now.

What made you want to purchase Rihanna’s FENTY Skin products?

I LOVE Rihanna, I’m pretty sure if you ask any of my friends they would tell you the same. When she first came out with Fenty Beauty I bought one of their first products, which was the Gloss Bomb and loved it! After that I said “if Rihanna comes out with a skincare line I’ll buy it” and lo and behold she did and I bought it.

Can you give us a quick rundown of each product and your initial impressions?

She came out with 3 products in her first launch and, before I go into detail, one of those was a Sunscreen, which I appreciated especially coming from a Black woman. Specifically, in the Black community applying sunscreen isn’t normalized and I think that was a great first addition to the line. Now going into my overall first impressions…

Cleanser (rating: 9/10)

The cleanser suds up really well and gives your face a fresh clean feeling without drying it out which is amazing!! The only reason I didn’t give this a full 10/10 is because although it smells great, fragrance can be harsh for a lot of people’s skin so that eliminates a few candidates. And, although the packaging is great for travel because it is a twist cap, a bit of the cleanser dries up on the cap and touches whatever surface you put it on which can also be a bit harmful for people with sensitive skin.

Screen Shot 2020-08-23 at 4.42.37 PM

“Fat Water” a.k.a Toner (rating: 9/10)

Similar to the cleanser, it’s just the packaging that deducts that one point, mainly because it is a bit harder of a plastic and you can accidentally use too much product pushing (which I have done….multiple times). Other than that, I love the Fat Water and I actually see a physical difference, mainly in the amount of oil my face accumulates. I have combination skin, but it’s more oily than dry and since this is a pore refining toner it doesn’t help get rid of large pores, but definitely helps shrink them a.k.a less oil on your face throughout the day!!

Screen Shot 2020-08-23 at 4.43.04 PM

Sunscreen SPF 30 (rating: 10/10)

And finally the sunscreen, my favorite honestly. I love this stuff! It does have a bit of fragrance so sensitive skin people be warned, but it’s not overwhelming. It smells great, isn’t greasy, you don’t need to use a lot of product, and the bottle is reusable! So, anytime you need a refill you only need to purchase the inside portion with the actual product. This is probably my favorite packaging because of that, and it also travels well. A lot of people use this as a moisturizer, which it technically is based on the name,  but I personally still use a moisturizer and add this on top as my sunscreen.

What is your favorite product out of the collection and why?

I already brought this up, but definitely the sunscreen! I do like all the products and I have seen a difference in my skin, but the sunscreen is really my favorite. Not only because it looks great, smells great, and feels great, but because it’s promoting more people to protect their skin from the sun and I love that!

How do these products compare to the skin care products that you already own?

I dibble and dabble in a lot of different products, but since quarantine i’ve been doing a bit more research trying to understand things and I do enjoy these products better. I still use my other serums in my routine, but I haven’t yet switched back to my old cleanser, toner, and sunscreen. Will I? Not sure maybe, it’s only been about a week and a half since I started using Fenty Skin, so time will tell. For now though, I am going to stick to using Fenty Skin. I think there are a lot of comparable products, but in the end it’s all about what you believe your skin needs and listening to it when a product it doesn’t agree with your skin.

Are these products worth their price?

I for sure think these are worth the price!! Skin care is generally expensive if you’re going for more high end products and I have paid more for other skin care products than I have for these, i’ll admit. So if you’re looking for a bit more of an upscale product, you won’t break the bank, but this isn’t your standard drug store skin products (and nothing wrong with your typical drugstore products I use them too), but compared to a Drunk Elephant, Youth to the People, or other similar to this, Fenty Skin is definitely more affordable!

Are these products something you can see yourself using every day and replacing your old products with?

Yes for sure! I already replaced my old everyday products for these and I use these products day and night, besides the sunscreen I only use that during the day. Overall, these products aren’t harsh, do not try out your skin, and are super easy to incorporate into your everyday life busy or not.

Last question. What are your overall final impressions of Rihanna’s skin care debut and do you think her line competes with other popular brands, such as Kylie Skin, The Ordinary, and Glossier?

In all honesty I haven’t tried Kylie Skin or Glossier, but I moved from The Ordinary toner (which I loved and still do love) to the Fat Water Toner. I really like Fat Water Toner, mainly because I saw a difference in my pores after the first night I used it. I still use my ordinary serums in my everyday routine and I still use my drug store Ceerave moisturizer and aloe vera gel, but for the products that did get replaced by Rihanna’s products I will miss, but at the moment don’t plan on going back.

How often you use it

I have been using this face wash every night for the last 2 years. I like to use their Treatment Enzyme Exfoliating Powder Cleanser together with their face wash three times a week, or when I am wearing heavy makeup, or when my face is feeling particularly dirty (usually in the summer when I tend to feel and get very sweaty). This combination leaves my face feeling super clean and soft. The trick is to let the enzyme cleanser sit on your face for about a minute after massaging it in for 60 seconds, this really allows the enzymes to eat away at the dead skin. I also try to massage the cleanser into my face for 60 seconds but sometimes I get lazy or am in a rush.

What you like about the product

It gets my face clean without drying it out, it is super gentle and hydrating, and it also smells amazing. Normally, items that have a fragrance irritate my skin but this doesn’t.

How you found it

I was looking for a new everyday cleanser for a while and a friend of mine who I consult with on virtually anything I buy recommended it to me. She had gotten a trial sample for free, loved it, and ended up buying it (along with the whole product line), so I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed.

How often you use it

I use it on my blemishes as soon as I spot them, I dab a bit on with my finger (you can use a q-tip), and it dries it right up. I usually use it at night, it’s the last thing I put on my face when I am getting ready to go to bed. Be careful not to use too much and not to get it too close to your eyes, I made this mistake one too many times. It stings!

What you like about the product

All you need is a little bit, use it a couple of days, like 2 or 3, depending on the size of your blemish, and the blemish pretty much disappears without a trace.

How you found it

Reading hundreds of online reviews on how to get rid of a blemish fast, haha.

How often you use it

I use this every day in the morning all year round. When I know that I will be out in the direct sunlight all day, I will swap this out for Avene Reflexe Solaire 50+.

What you like about the product

Sunscreen is tricky for people with a darker complexion, most tend to leave a white cast. I try to look for a sunscreen that won’t make me look ashy, and with the Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer SPF 15, I am moisturizing and protecting myself from the sun.

How you found it

My favorite Instagrammer, Melissa’s Wardrobe, recommended this product. She always recommends the best stuff. She has a hashtag #melmademedoit, anything she recommends on her stories usually sells out fast. Also, her stories are HILARIOUS, literally watch them like a t.v show, check her out! So yeah, she recommended it and I tried it and loved it. I have been using it every morning for the last 3 years? Maybe longer.

Every day

What you like about the product

It’s an amazing serum for the hair. Whether you have curly, straight, or wazy, all hair types can benefit. It adds shine, softness, and makes your hair look and feel healthier. Definitely a ride or die product.

How you found it

I was searching for a hair oil, and I saw this one got great reviews. I have also loved the brand KERASTASE, as I prefer salon-quality products for my hair. I bought it and fell in love, and it has always been a product I repurchase.

How often you use it

I use it every time I wear makeup.

What you like about the product

Everything about this product is amazing. The pigmentation, blendability, shade range, and finish are incredible. As someone of color, it can be difficult to find a bronzer deep enough, and with a warm undertone. ABH’s have bronzers for all skin tones, and this product can be used in multiple ways and is fantastic all around.

How you found it

I was shopping in Sephora, and ABH is my all-time favorite brand, so I went over to look, and I saw they just released their bronzers. I decided to buy one, and it became one of my cult favorites.

How often you use it

Every time I want to style my hair (about 1 to 2x week)

What you like about the product

I love this product because it is so easy to use, and non-damaging on your hair. As someone with thick, coarse hair, blow-drying normally takes forever, and it takes a lot of effort to smooth your hair in the process. With the Dyson, it is extremely powerful, yet gentle on their hair, making the process fast, and leaving your hair look great.

How you found it

When Dyson’s first hair dryer launched in 2016, it quickly grew and received hype as Dyson entered the hair industry. I held off buying it for a while because I didn’t think the price point was justified. However, I quickly got sick of my current blow-dryer and decided to purchase it.

Dr. Jart moisturizer in the morning & the Rose cream at night

What you like about the product

The Dr. Jart moisturizer is fabulous for the day because it has SPF 30 to protect you from the sun and helps soothe redness. It’s perfect for the days I bravely enable the video feature on Zoom meetings because it provides light coverage. I like the Rose cream because it’s very hydrating and you will wake up looking like a glowing bébé.

How you found it

I found the Dr. Hauschka Rose Cream just perusing Whole Foods and the Dr. Jart cream was recommended to me by a blessed Sephora employee.

Whenever I wash my hair

What you like about the product

The Seanik shampoo bar gives the hair great volume but Lush also sells other types that cater to a wide variety of hair goals. There is no plastic packaging and you can just store the bars in a metal tin which is a good way to reduce some waste in your personal care routine. I love the Briogeo conditioner primarily because I have curly hair and the product is very rich and moisturizing. As an added bonus, it smells like a tropical island paradise and is vegan, cruelty-free and deemed “clean” by Sephora’s standards. These two are just a brilliant pairing.

How you found it

I learned about the shampoo bars from a friend and heard about Briogeo through a podcast! The founder Nancy Twine just did another podcast episode for “How I Built This” & I highly recommend listening to her story!

Dayne Brown on Being a Business Attorney

Ever wonder what it is like to be a business attorney? Well, now you know.

When asking Dayne Brown about her experience as a business attorney, I thought it best we start at the very beginning: how she ended up sitting down to take the LSAT in the first place.

Dayne first mentioned that she always wanted to work in book publishing and moved from her home in Seattle, Washington to New York, New York to start her first career working for Oxford University Press. Dayne specialized in historical non-fiction while working at Oxford University Press for four years, earning $30,300 a year. Even in 2007, this was barely enough to get by in New York City. When her apartment got bed bugs (eep!) that wouldn’t leave, Dayne found herself stuck. She had no savings and she did not have enough money to move out of her apartment and replace all of her things, so she was forced to move back home to Seattle. Before bedbugs, Dayne had been reluctantly exploring other careers that might provide a more sustainable livelihood. Fortunately, one of her friends (a former NYC public school teacher) was in his last year of law school at Columbia at that time and was quite candid about his move into law. He shared the fact that he would be earning a six-figure income right immediately upon graduation. However, he also mentioned this sort of position was really only available to people who attend one of the top ten law schools in the nation. Admission at those schools is based almost entirely on the applicant’s Law School Admissions Test, or LSAT, score. Dayne then spent hours during her lunch breaks, on weekends, and in the evenings self-tutoring to take the LSAT. When she received her score, Dayne knew that she would likely receive admission to at least one of the top schools, and she ended up attending The University of Chicago’s Law School.

While attending The University of Chicago, Dayne soon realized that she was more interested in business law as opposed to other forms of law such as litigation. Dayne was more passionate about the collaboration that working in business law involved. She noted that, often in business matters, lawyers are interested in helping achieve what is in the best interest of everyone, while litigation is often a zero-sum game.

Having worked in business law for six years, Dayne is currently an associate at a large law firm, Cooley LLP, that specializes in representing high-growth technology and life sciences companies. Dayne’s clients are most often pre-revenue and raising capital from venture capital funds that specialize in early-stage investments. Dayne has worked on many private financing deals as well as biotech initial public offerings, or IPOs. She also assists her early-stage clients with corporate governance, employment, and equity compensation issues.

For Dayne, a typical workday involves checking her email first thing in the morning in order to gauge the business of her day. On a busy day when she is involved in a couple of active deals, Dayne might receive more than 200 emails. The volume of email traffic is a result of her role as a filter, both for information that needs to flow upward to partners and downward to paralegals and junior associates. Dayne first answers the most urgent emails and then often spends an hour or two on client calls and in administrative meetings. In the afternoon, Dayne drafts documents, provides feedback on the work product of more junior attorneys, and she might have a call or two with opposing counsel. Most days, Dayne is able to take a couple of hours off in the evening to spend with her young children. Dayne then usually gets back online at around 8:30 pm to finish any outstanding projects and to correspond with clients, partners, and associates.

asole grey 🕊 (@asolegrey) _ Twitter (1)

Another aspect of Dayne’s work is finding clients for Cooley. One way to do this is through a strong social media presence, for instance through LinkedIn, her personal bio on the firm’s website, speaking on panels, and participating in networking events. Thus far, however, Dayne has been most successful in acquiring clients who are also personal friends. Even when they aren’t friends first, Dayne’s client relationships often last for years as she and the other attorneys she works with will support a company as it grows and its legal needs become more complex.

A typical venture financing deal that she works on takes about three to six weeks and involves a relatively small investment (usually between $2 and $10 million). Mergers and acquisitions, or M&A, deals typically take six to twelve weeks because of the higher level of due diligence that is required, and an IPO takes about six to nine months.

Dayne notes that the most challenging part of her work is getting to the right answer in an efficient manner. Many of Dayne’s clients expect her to be an expert in the specific law and technicalities of their field. Dayne mentions that it can be challenging to become familiar with the specifics of each deal, work on the legalities of the deal, and communicate this effectively to the client, and fast. Her clients pay on an hourly basis, which makes executing a deal in a timely manner for these companies very important. Associates on Dayne’s level are responsible for transforming a three-page term sheet–which outlines the principle agreement between parties–into a hundred pages of documents that lay out the specifics of what is being agreed upon. This ties into the greatest misconception that Dayne believes people have about lawyers–that lawyers are made to throw up roadblocks to hinder their progress. As Dayne highlights, lawyers are there to assist growing businesses to thrive and prosper in the most effective, efficient, and legal (of course!) way.

Dayne views the healthcare industry as being ripe for disruption, which is why it has become one area of focus for her. Helping people bring their ideas to the world is what Dayne has become passionate about and what she believes makes her work compelling. Dayne represents companies that are looking to solve some of the world’s toughest problems in innovative ways, which makes her work incredibly engaging.

giphy-1

Her advice for anyone looking to attend law school? Dayne mentions that it will definitely be helpful to know why, specifically, you want to go to law school. For example, it is good to know whether you want to become a public defender or are leaning toward M&A transactions. Additionally, considering law school is such a capital intensive decision, you want to make sure that your investment will be worth it! Dayne advises that, if you want a job at a firm, you spend a lot of time studying for the LSAT; your LSAT score will determine if you are able to go to a reputable school and therefore have a better chance of getting a job in a law firm afterward. Graduating from second, third, and fourth-tier law schools often result in not even close to the same opportunities at firms as top tier schools, resulting in a lot of underemployed law school graduates. One tip for deciding where to go to law school is to look at the school’s post-graduate employment statistics and also some of the places that graduates from these schools are employed at. This will provide an idea of the kinds of opportunities that you will be exposed to upon graduation.

If you are interested in becoming a lawyer, I hope that you take the time to consider some of Dayne’s wealth of professional advice. If you haven’t ever considered it, never rule law out completely, you never know when and where the law bug may bite!

Tips for Effective Fundraising with Jake Heller

All of the strategies Jake Heller and I have used for effective fundraising.

Fundraising can often raise a lot of emotions; fear, apprehension, excitement, and anxiety to name a few. Bottom line: fundraising can be challenging. Yet, given that there are more charitable organizations, projects, businesses, and relief efforts that need funding now more than ever, I thought that it might be helpful to collaborate with a friend of mine, Jake Heller, on how he and I have gone about raising money for the projects that we are passionate about. With the right tools, I believe that anyone can bring their ideas to life. Now, you will have those tools too!

A Little Bit About Us

Jake Heller and No Kid HungryScreen Shot 2020-08-07 at 1.41.39 PM

Upon moving back home to Northern California as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jake found that he needed new outlets for his time and energy and soon rediscovered his love for outdoor cycling. After a couple of months of daily cycling, Jake knew he needed to do a fundraiser, and contemplated how he would accomplish this. To get people interested in the event and the organization, Jake was convinced it would have to be something special and uniquely challenging. It was then that he decided to fundraise for a triathlon. Jake found some friends who had experience training for triathlons on college teams and soon began training with them. These friends helped push and support him throughout his journey. Jake decided to donate the proceeds from his fundraising efforts to No Kid Hungry, which provides meals to children in need. Child hunger is something Jake felt was often overlooked, especially when he found out that in a normal year, according to the USDA, more than 11 million children in the United States live in “food insecure” homes. In 2020, due to COVID 19 and schools being closed, this number could be closer to 18 million children. With a worthy cause in mind, Jake had a plan to make a difference.

Ursula Dedekind and Like a Florentine

Screen Shot 2020-08-19 at 8.09.52 PMWhen I was a senior in high school, I was required by my school to conduct a senior study project during the month of May. I contemplated many different ideas but knew that I wanted to do something interesting, something life-changing. I landed on the idea of spending one month in Florence, Italy, taking cooking classes, and learning about traditional Florentine cooking. However, when I thought more about the idea, the unavoidable stood in my way. How was I going to fund this trip? It would have been easy to simply ask my parents to pay for the majority of the trip. But, I knew I would not be taking complete ownership of the project if I did this. Instead, I decided to start a Kickstarter campaign in order to learn the valuable skill of fundraising and how to personally advocate for myself.

Choosing a Platform

Jake chose Go Fund Me and liked that the only fee taken from the platform is through donations from donors, which he knew would help maximize his impact. Jake also knew it was a platform people trusted, the money from donors goes straight to the organization, and he didn’t want any chance of money being lost or people thinking he was messing with any donations.

I decided to go with Kickstarter because I knew that it was a reputable and well-established platform that had high traffic because of the dynamic companies and projects that were often posted on their site. Since its launch in 2009, Kickstarter has hosted close to 186,000 successfully funded projects and has raised $5.2 billion dollars in pledge money from 18 million people. It is important to keep in mind, however, that Kickstarter takes 5% of total funds raised with an additional 3% + $0.20 per pledge.

Setting a Fundraising Goal

giphy

Jake first picked $1,000 as his fundraising goal, but, after such a successful first day of fundraising, he doubled it to $2,000. Jake wanted his contribution to have an impact, but also wanted it to be attainable and an amount where people felt that their donation would have an impact- a win-win situation.

My fundraising amount of $6,350 came from a budget that I had created for the expenses of my trip. I factored in my flight, Airbnb, cooking classes, and even the portion of the fundraising that would be taken from Kickstarter to reach my desired amount.

Fundraising Strategy

At first, Jake thought “If you build it they will come,” however, most of his donations came through reaching out to friends and family. Jake notes that networking was the most impactful for helping to reach his goal. All of his donations were from people Jake knew personally or from the families of people he knew personally. To attract donors, one of the first things Jake made sure he wanted to emphasize throughout his fundraising was, “Why this organization, and why this organization now?” He stresses the fact that picking the right partner and having good reasons behind the partner you choose will set your fundraising efforts up for success. The organization he chose, No Kid Hungry, is already close to Jake’s heart because it works to make sure all kids in America have healthy and accessible meals, but especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, this cause is more important than ever. Next, he wanted to share, “Why me?” People want a fundraiser they know will be successful or at least get close to the goal. Showing people he was serious about both fundraising and completing the triathlon was hugely important. Part of Jake showing how serious he was about the project was adding as many updates as he could to keep his audience informed. He was training every day and wanted people to understand he would not stop until “game day”.

Like Jake, I did a considerable amount of texting, calling, and emailing friends and family to support my project. The more personal and intentional that I made my outreach, the more willing others were in lending a hand. It also helped that I had expressed an interest in cooking and baking throughout my life, baking cakes for friend’s birthdays and meals for guests in our home. I also found that providing rewards for certain pledge amounts helped to incentivize some of my backers. For example, if you pledged $100 or more you would be receiving a cookbook that I would be creating and publishing upon my return, which 24 people were rewarded. I also included a reward for pledging $300 or more, with the reward being a private Italian cooking class with myself, the menu for this lesson being custom-tailored to their liking, which 2 people received. Although the point of fundraising is to give without receiving anything in return, sometimes it is nice to get a small perk for your generosity.

The Biggest Challenges

The biggest challenge Jake encountered was tapping out a lot of his friends too early on in the process. Jake thought he would have gained a bit more traction, raising the $2,000 easily. He also identified the fact that there were many other amazing fundraisers going on at the time he was fundraising, which made it hard to cut through some of the noise. That being said, Jake’s plan is to complete another triathlon as soon as it is both safe and when his body is able to reach that goal!

For me, personally, the biggest challenge I encountered during my fundraising process was “the ask”. Reaching out to friends, family, friends of friends- anyone I could think of- felt really daunting to me, a young senior in high school. It was easier for me to think about all of the things that were embarrassing or disappointing, rather than thinking about outreach as throwing darts at a dartboard, you only need to pay attention to the ones that stick. When it came to crunch time in the end, I learned to put my hesitation aside and really go for anyone I could think of to put out the ask. And it paid off!

Motivation

For Jake, having the support of so many of his friends definitely helped to motivate him. Knowing he was swimming, biking, and running for a cause was a huge motivator. Jake knew people were counting on him, and he was not going to let them down!

I can definitely say that when you look at a fundraising number that is as large as $2,000 to over $6,000, it is easy to get discouraged at the beginning- “How am I going to pull this off?” Yet, you will never know unless you try and, as Jake experienced, if you don’t hit your number the first time, it is totally OK to creatively think about other ways to reach your target. The important thing to keep in mind before any fundraising is the why question. Like Jake and I, you want to be passionate about why you are raising money. When the going gets tough, the answer to this question will help you be resilient and push forward towards your goal.

The Outcome

Jake never thought he would become a triathlete, donating thousands of dollars towards a good cause, and I never would have thought that my dream of studying cooking in Florence could become a reality. What makes Jake and I different from you? Nothing really. I hope our stories serve as inspiration for you to get outside of your comfort zone, believe the impossible, and take that first step in asking others to join in building something with you. You never know where the journey will take you and who will come along for the ride.

Help Jake Reach His Goal!

Donate to Jake’s Go Fund Me, where all of the proceeds will go directly to No Hungry Kid.

3 Friends Picking their Top 3 Beauty Items Part II

The 3 beauty products 3 of my friends swear by.

There is a well known saying that goes “you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with;” if only the same applied to my makeup bag- I’d have one incredible collection then! My friends have been an unlimited source of beauty knowledge and tips to me. Having spent so much time around them, I began asking myself questions like “do I need a jade roller?”, “should I switch to a silk pillowcase?”, and even “do I need a Sephora rewards account?”, thoughts I never considered would have ever crossed my mind. Where would I be without them!? Probably severely unmoisturized at this point. Lucky for you I have pulled together three more friends and three more favorites for you to check out! (Stay tuned next week for three more friends and three more finds!)

Studio Finish Pot Concealer by MAC

How often you use it

Every time I need my dark circles and the scars on my face covered. My makeup is incomplete without this.

What you like about the product

It has excellent coverage and can cover the darkest of spots and discoloration with very little product. A little goes a long way as it has great pigmentation. It does not dry the skin too much and also provides extra SPF. I feel like this is the only concealer that hides my extremely dark circles without giving it an ashy look.

I started using this first year of college, I found about this trick in a MAC store in Hyderabad, India the makeup artist told me to always use different concealer colours for my dark circles and my spots, which has been a game-changer. He recommended I use a reddish undertone pot concealer for my under eyes and a yellowish undertone pot concealer for scars on my face. I have been doing this since and I love it.

Carmex Classic Lip Balm

How often you use it

Every day, almost 5 times a day

What you like about that product

I have been using this product for the past 5 years. I have dry and chapped lips in general but since I have started using Carmex, my lips have become softer. It does not have a strong smell and it is not at all sticky.

How you found it

I’ve heard about it before and just wanted to try it out once. I have been using it to this day.

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

How often you use it

When I need to do a full face of makeup and need thick and long lashes

What you like about it

It does not clump together. For someone who does not have a lot of lashes, this mascara really gives an amazing volume and make my lashes look really long.

How you found it

One of my friends suggested I use this when I was studying abroad in Paris. I bought my first one there and have been using it ever since.

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Natural Skin Perfector

How often you use it

Every day before I leave the house

What you like about the product

I don’t wear foundation and this tinted moisturizer gives me the perfect amount of coverage and is so light at the same time.

How you found it

My Mum would use it, and one day I tried it on and stole it from her. But eventually, I bought my own because it was that good!

Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes™ 4-in-1 Mascara

How often you use it

Usually at night when I’m going out

What you like about the product

Finding the right mascara for you can be tricky! But this one felt good to apply and looked really nice as well. And I received a lot of compliments on my eyes once I started wearing it!

How you found it

My Aunt actually gifted me the travel-sized mascara and it was at a time when I had run out of mine. I used it for many 1-2 months and received several compliments. I had to stock up on more immediately!

What you like about the product

My skin can get very dry and this is the perfect moisturizer for me. I usually apply my makeup afterward and it leaves a really nice glow on my face.

How you found it

I have been using it since I was a baby! My family would all use Nivea cream products growing up and it’s one thing I haven’t replaced all my life.

3 Friends Picking their Top 3 Beauty Items

The 3 beauty products 3 of my friends swear by.

Whenever I look into my makeup bag I am amazed by how many products I have accumulated over the years, having only started wearing makeup just three years ago. When I think about each product I own, it is hard not to think of the friend that recommended it, which is why I never enter a Sephora sans friend in-tow. Some of my best memories in college are from getting ready before a birthday party or night out, when my friends and I shared makeup tips and glittery palettes. Undoubtedly, my favorite beauty finds have been because I had admired a lip gloss on a friend or an eye shadow on another. My friends have been a much-needed window for me into the beauty industry and have taught me almost everything I know about different products and brands, which is why I have recruited some of mine to share their favorites. (Stay tuned next week for three more friends and three more finds!)

A few different lip glosses

How often you use

Almost every day (although would not recommend wearing it these days since it sticks to your mask)

What you like about the product

I think lip gloss can elevate your whole look- it’s so effortless and it makes your skin look more hydrated! I have different ones for different purposes: the Glossier Lipgloss in Red is perfect for daily wear, it has just the right amount of color and doesn’t feel sticky. The Kiko Milano 3D Hydra Lipgloss in Clear is really good to wear for a night out because it lasts a long time and also kind of makes your lips look more 3D? This shade is also really fun and is super easy to wear. Lastly Tower 28 Beauty ShineOn Lip Jelly in Chill, which is the most soothing and non-sticky lip gloss ever. It’s actually a combination of a lip gloss and a moisturizing lip treatment so it feels amazing on your lips.

How you found it

Mostly through trial and error, these three are the ones I have purchased again and again!

Milk Makeup Eye Pigment

How often you use

Mostly for special occasions, parties, and night outs

What you like about the product

It literally does not move, fade, or smudge off of your eyelids once you have it on and comes off easily with any makeup remover. The shades are also super pigmented and bright which is rare for an eyeshadow. My favorite shade is “rave” because it looks so good on brown eyes! I also love that it’s a cream formula so there’s no fallout to clean up 🙂

How you found it

I randomly bought my sister one of them in the shade “after-party” and she really liked it. She bought “rave” and “sesh” and I loved how they looked.

L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Primer

How often you use it

Really depends on whether or not I’m going to be wearing mascara that day or not. Usually, I use this for a night out, parties, or whenever I want to be a little extra!

What you like about the product

I use it before I apply my mascara- it basically coats your eyelashes so that when you use mascara your eyelashes look 10x thicker! It makes a huge difference and it almost looks like you’re wearing false eyelashes. I also love this product because sometimes I use it as a brow gel. It has a much stronger hold than a lot of other brow gels and is perfect for styling your brows.

How you found it

I was actually trying to buy the L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara because I heard that it was a really good dupe for the Too Faced Better than Sex Mascara. I got distracted by something or the other and accidentally put the primer in my cart.

Caudalie Vinopure Serum

How often you use it

Almost every day during the summer

What you like about that product

It might sound a bit aggressive but I absolutely HATE SKINCARE that leaves a sticky feeling. I was desperate for a serum that was light and absorbed fast and this serum not only was that but also kept my face clean throughout the summer. Summer is definitely a tricky season when it comes to both makeup and skincare. The heat, humidity, and pollution (if you live in a city) are the perfect combo to enlarge your pores. This product was ideal for before and after a long day of makeup. Light, smells good, and no sticky feeling! Plus this product has salicylic acid and it helped me get rid of my whiteheads. A side note: Sephora sells it but its almost double the price they sell it in Europe. So if you are planning to visit France or other European countries, picking a few up at the duty-free would be ideal!

How you found it

When I was in Paris my skin was not doing well. My makeup looked uneven and had whiteheads. When this happens, instead of reaching for a primer or a physical exfoliator, I reach for a chemical exfoliator. I looked up some pharmacy-beauty brands, this one popped up!

Sabon citron blossom body scrub

How often you use it

Once a week

What you like about the product

I’ve been a fan of Sabon body scrub for about eight years now! I’ve struggled with chicken skin on my legs after shaving but this product was effective yet so gentle. It has dead sea salt with these oils that smell heavenly and is so moisturizing. Rose tea scent was my original favorite but the citrus blossom is my new fav! On a lazy weekend where I want to have a relaxing morning, I’d use this in my shower and I feel like I’m laying in the middle of the orange tree field. (Yes I am exaggerating but that’s how much I like it)

How you found it

I walked by a Sabon shop in Soho eight years ago and it smelled so good I found myself at the counter handing over my credit card.

Anastasia Clear Brow Mascara

How often you use it

Everyday

What you like about the product

The hold on the product is amazing! So I have my brows micro bladed but I always fill in roughly. But my natural brows are shaped a bit oddly at the ends and are trimmed short. But this product was a game-changer. Few swipes and it help my brows have texture and fuller shape. Korea is super rainy nowadays and since we always wear masks, I just throw on this product, a mascara, tinted lip balm and I’m out the door!

Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado

How often you use it

I use it every day, twice daily (morning and evening) along with my 5-step skincare routine

What you like about the product

Everything, from the texture to the results I’ve seen over the past two years. It’s perfect to moisturize the delicate skin around the eyes and almost immediately hides the fine lines. Over time I’ve noticed my dark circles have become much lighter and less noticeable.

How you found it

I found out about it at Kiehl’s in London about two years ago when I had gone into a store to ask for a whole skincare routine for my skin. The results have been amazing and I’ve been loyal to them ever since!

L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream

How often you use it

During the winter months, whenever I can! During the warmer months, I apply it before going out.

What you like about it

It’s perfect for the winter and the summer, it moisturizes really well and penetrates quickly too so that it doesn’t leave the hands feeling greasy after application.

How you found it

One of my colleagues at my first internship used to have it and last year, when I needed to buy a new hand-cream, I decided to try this one!

Tarte Creaseless Under Eye Concealer

How often you use it

I use it whenever I have to go out and put makeup on.

What you like about the product

I think it has great coverage and really brightens my under eyes, furthermore, unlike other concealers I’ve tried, it doesn’t clump and build up in my fine lines – which makes me look older and more tired.

How you found it

I found out about it a year ago in a Sephora store in Paris, one of the beauty consultants recommended it as a change to my previous Laura Mercier one.

Stay tuned for next week’s post where my friends Tanisha Uttamchandani, Sarah Charles, and Hashmita Amineni share their three beauty favorites!
