Gua Sha – the Next Practice to Add to Your Skincare Routine

Sponsored by our “editor-in-chief of the day” winner: Luna Zhang!

刮痧: gua sha, pronounced as “gwa shah”.

Most of us have seen the words gua sha when perusing online beauty blogs and facial menus, but what does the term actually mean? How do you practice it? Where did the practice even come from?! I did a deep internet dive to answer some of the most pressing questions around this new trend in skin care, so let’s get into it.

rose_on_Twitter-removebg-previewAccording the Health Magazine, gua means “to scrape” and sha refers to “sand or small pebbles” in Chinese, a the term that directly describes the traditional Chinese medicine practice itself. Gua sha dates back to as far as the Yuan Dynasty in the 13th century, according to Ping Zhang, DOM, L.Ac, a New York–based traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) guru, recently featured in Vogue. The practice was originally used as a home remedy to treat heatstroke and other mild illnesses, where practitioners would use knuckles, coins, spoons, and other tools on the patient’s back to increase circulation and supposedly draw out toxins. Because there was a significant amount of pressure used during the process, bruises would often form where the skin was pressed and intense red marks were left on the back. Gua sha relates to the Chinese belief in qi or chi, which needs to be balanced and flow freely to ensure good health.

Although the recent skincare trend has adopted the same name, westerners are practicing gua sha in a very different way. In western practice, skincare enthusiasts are using the practice on their faces to drain the facial lymphatics from excess fluid, relieve facial tension, and reduce the appearance of aging as well as sculpt the face. The practice is done with uniquely shaped stone tools, which are often made out of jade or rose quartz and, when applied to the face, is done with significantly lighter pressure as to not injure or bruise. Today, gua sha has been integrated into many facial treatments, where a skin oil is applied before the stone sculpting occurs and relaxation is the goal.

Speculators believe that the practice might have become more popular in recent years because of one’s ability to inexpensively purchase the tools and practice a gua sha routine in the comfort of their own home. As the trend of self-care has increased, so have practices like gua sha! Gua sha also shows visible results within a short period of time, which has added to the practice’s intrigue. What is great about gua sha is that it can be performed by just about anyone. However, if you are interested in giving it a try at home, make sure that you are practicing in good form!

If you want to learn how to perform gua sha at home yourself, here’s a video for you!

Tanya Garg on Finding Artistic Inspiration

Finding inspiration in the past, present, and future.

The works of Tanya Garg can be described as many things- fanciful, delicate, whimsy, colorful, energetic, inspiring- the list goes on. Tanya creates genuine art pieces that are full of beautiful perspective, not only in the form of paintings, but also in the form of clay mushrooms and beadwork. Tanya finds inspiration wherever she has been, goes, or is going, whether it be the past, present, or future. Her works are intimate and incredibly detailed- pieces that I knew needed an audience like the blog! Scroll, read, and immerse yourself in the works of Tanya and how she finds artistic inspiration.

Tanya! Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi! My name is Tanya Garg, I am 26 years old, and an Aries. I went to school for painting and currently I live in India. I have a LOT of hobbies- including (but not limited to) cooking, traveling, dancing, playing with my nephews, online shopping, hoarding things, organizing, making crafts, cycling, gossiping with my friends, watching niche documentaries…the list goes on.

What has your journey as an artist been like and how has your art changed overtime?

Screen Shot 2020-12-10 at 3.43.34 PMWhen I was in school, the only things I made were photorealistic portraits with pencil. The only reason I went to art school was because I thought that was the only thing that I was good at, and I loved the idea of being an “artist.” I really can’t explain why I picked painting, because prior to college, I had never really painted. The first semester I was really awful at it—I knew what I wanted the painting to look like but I could never figure out how to do it. The only parts I liked about the class was going to museums, or galleries. Up until then, my perception of art was still very academic, and I only looked at the great masters of European art for inspiration. I started going to gallery openings on the first Thursday of every month because of the free wine, but it really opened up my eyes to different artists, art styles, mediums, and most of all to the fact that you could have multidisciplinary approaches to express yourself as an artist.

I sometimes cringe when describing myself as an artist, partly because I have a horrible case of imposter syndrome, and partly because I feel the formal education I received was quite academic and Euro-centric, and made me blind to the innumerable art forms that existed outside of the “art world,” or in some cases were not considered art at all.

The biggest struggle for me when creating work before was transcending my personal preconceived notions of what a painting should look like—what is the right way to paint a vase or getting the perspective right. It took some time to realize that the right way for me to express myself is not painting it the right way, but instead painting it the way that is most ideal to me. What objects can I put in, what colours can I paint, and what materials can I use to make this painting one that I enjoy the most.

What mediums do you primarily work with?

Again, I started painting with oil, because in my head that was the “proper” way to paint. I really appreciate oil painting. My favourite brand is Gamblin Colors, because I feel like they are innovative, and not stuck in the past, and they focus on developing contemporary solutions to oil painting, however, I recently switched to acrylics. I love the Golden Acrylic mediums, but now I try to just use whatever I can find.

Apart from painting, I hoard many things. I love making crafts, even though that is a bad word in the “Art World,” but I think that is just because historically women made crafts and the Art men were too insecure to give them the respect they deserve. Only now, people are waking up to all the genius women that were creating masterpieces. Obviously, I am not creating magnificent masterpieces (yet), but I like using materials from my childhood—play dough, papier mâché, beads. I have shelves filled with crap like that. I love collecting tchotchkes, and it is also one of my favourite words. I collect handmade toys, embroidery books, buttons, basically anything that looks pretty.

I also make iPad drawings because I’m bad at keeping a sketchbook. I use Adobe Sketch because I find Procreate too complicated. I only use one kind of brush but it’s so nice because I can work with different layers to have endless possibilities of the finished product.

What does your artistic process look like? What do you use as inspiration for your work and how do you find inspiration?

I don’t have one singular process. Sometimes I paint from photos, sometimes I make it up, sometimes I scroll through houses on Airbnb, sometimes I take inspiration from a book. I like having the tv on in the background when I paint, especially food shows. I am very inspired by my house and garden. I am a big consumer and a major maximalist, I love household objects, I love old things, I love antiques and really quirky objects, so I like to place them in my paintings.

Memory is a big one, since I am a very nostalgic person. Not only for the past, but also in a way trying to preserve memories for the future, and in some ways, I feel as our possessions are the only witness to time changing.

screen-shot-2020-12-10-at-11.50.57-amIn contrast, I do have a profound love for nature, and woodsy things- flowers, mushrooms, butterflies etc. I love painting on a cloudy day, in diffused light. My studio overlooks the kitchen garden, and it makes me feel like I’m painting somewhere in the countryside.

I don’t really draw out the composition with a pencil before painting. I always tint my canvas an outrageous colour and use another outrageous colour to paint out the general picture of where things will go. Throughout my painting life, people have been telling me to paint bigger, which I always resisted, but now I have started painting on the wall, and it has been really fun, and liberating to just put silly colours on the wall. My nephew got in trouble for colouring the wall once, so he keeps yelling at me, “Bua, you better not be drawing on the wall.”

What are some of your favorite pieces of art?

Some of the works that stand out are “This is not a Fountain,” by Subodh Gupta, “Non-Stop Conversation,” by Egyptian artist Amal Kenawy, where she covers a last remaining traditional building in a light pink quilt. Let’s see… I love everything Nathalie Lete does because I feel like she is the true definition of an artist- she is constantly making. I find conceptual artist Sophie Calle really funny- one of her works “Take Care of Yourself” was created when she received a break up email from her boyfriend at the time, and got it analyzed by 107 women in different occupations. Another time she went undercover and worked at a hotel for three weeks, and photographed all the guest’s belongings. I like her work because it focuses on the intimate lives and people and the possessions they own. I also really like her because she’s a little bit like a detective and I really wanted to be one when I was a kid.

If you could have dinner with anyone past or present who would it be and what would you eat?

Salma Hayek because she is so kind, generous, confident, cultured, hot, funny, and rich and we would eat whatever Salma wants because she has good taste and likes eating healthy. She also doesn’t like to diet or exercise so I think she’s the best.

What do you find the most challenging when working on a piece of art?

Screen Shot 2020-12-10 at 11.51.34 AM

I take forever to finish a painting because it’s the least enjoyable part.

What do you enjoy the most about the creative process and creating your art?

Having an idea for a piece…starting it. The second I finish, I take a photo and post it on Instagram, because I love the validation. But also, because I want to be prolific in whatever I make and so I love posting regularly because it motivates me to make work in abundance. I feel that the more I make, the more I discover and that inspires more confidence and happiness in creating works.

What is your ultimate dream in terms of collaborators, exhibitions, museums for your pieces to be in?

I worked at a gallery briefly and I really enjoyed being there, but I didn’t love the art world. So many of my friends, and also my mom, majored in fashion so I am always in awe of what they make. I really want to learn how to sew and embroider and those are mediums that I want to explore in my work. I don’t know about collaborations, because I don’t work that well with other people, but I like working with my mom.

Screen Shot 2020-12-10 at 11.48.23 AM

As for showing at galleries, I don’t love the idea of my paintings hanging on a white wall in a row. I imagine them in an environment, and that’s why installation art is so fascinating to me. I despise pretentiousness in art, and sometimes galleries can feel very cold and inaccessible. I make things that are familiar and comforting, so by displaying them on a cold white wall seems very lazy on my part.

I don’t like to take my art seriously, because then it wouldn’t be fun. I would like to work on a bigger scale and make works and objects that vibe with all kinds of people, even those outside the art world.

I feel like I have a lot of learning to do, but I think the ultimate dream would be to always be making and exploring. I don’t like limits and I like to imagine and make generously.

Stretch Concealer in G8 by Glossier

How often you use it

Every time I put on make up.

What you like about the product

The consistency of this product is what makes it for me. The product is creamy, which is ideal for application with your fingers. The difference between my under eyes with this product versus without is night and day, the coverage being pretty remarkable. I also like to use the concealer on my trouble areas, covering up any spots to make my skin matte before I go in and apply powder.

Clear Brow Gel by Anastasia Beverly Hills

How often you use it

Every time I put on make up.

What you like about the product

I really like the fact that the applicator brush is as big as a mascara brush and that there is a fair amount of gel in the tube, which means it lasts forever. The gel also doesn’t make my eyebrows super stiff, making for a more natural, yet stylized look.

3 Friends Picking their Top 3 Beauty Items Part IX

The 3 beauty products 3 of my friends swear by.

Friends, friends, friends, the time has come at last to say goodbye! 27 friends and 27 products later, here we are! This will be the last traditional post of the series, which only leaves next week when, I- your friend- share 9 of my favorite products with you! Thank you so much for coming along for the ride. I hope you took away some new beauty recommendations, cracked a smile ever Friday morning, and remembered how important your friends are. Without our friends and the ones we love, what fun would this world be? Who would we share make up tips with, who would help us choose eye shadow colors, and who would lend us a make up wipe at the end of the night? Lipstick doesn’t last forever, but with enough care, time, and attention friends can.

Skin perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant by Paula’s Choice

What you like about the product

Skincare is very important to me as I rarely use makeup and exfoliating is the key to having bright, fresh and clear skin. I used to use scrubs in the past which are really rough and therefore bad for your skin. Chemical exfoliants on the other hand are amazing at getting rid of dead skin and debris making my skin look clear and smooth.

3 Friends Picking their Top 3 Beauty Items Part VIII

The 3 beauty products 3 of my friends swear by.

Sometimes it is good to be reminded to stick to the basics. Some of the recommendations in this post are simple and straightforward, which I love. Drink water, wear sunscreen, and just moisturize for goodness sake! We can never have too many reminders to take care of our primary needs first and foremost. In this way, beauty is just like our friends. A quick “I am thinking of you” text and a handwritten letter go a long way. A few of my best memories with friends have been a lazy Sunday brunch, a friend stopping to chat with me at the library desk, where I used to work, or a good laugh over our daily catch up. Sometimes you just have to KISS- keep it simple silly- but make sure your lips are moisturized and glossy first!

My #1 favorite beauty product would have to be WATER, H2O… I know, not conventionally viewed as a “beauty product,” but honestly it’s the number one key ingredient to overall skin health. I try to drink around a gallon a day.

How often you use it

Everyday

What you like about the product

It’s refreshing AND it does way more than just help your skin glow-up, it also;

  • increases energy
  • helps fight bloating
  • helps digestion
  • improves joint health
  • improves eye health
  • Need I go on? The benefits are endless.

How you found it

Obviously I have always drank water, but I started challenging myself to drink a gallon a day about 3 years back when I got into working out, since then it’s been a ritual that I, my skin, my body and my brain love. I feel my best when I’m hydrated!

UV Shield Broad-Spectrum SPF 45 by EltaMD

How often you use it

Use a dime size every morning after moisturizer, at least 20 minutes before sun exposure

What you like about the product

It’s oil-free and super lightweight. It’s a mineral sunblock with transparent zinc oxide, which makes it safe to use after dermatologic procedures (I get microneedling every 3 months). It’s relatively affordable and can be applied to face and body. Its SPF 45 makes it adequate for daily sun exposure.

Daily Moisturizing Lotion by CeraVe

How often you use it

Use one pump of the lotion after washing my face with lukewarm water, and after serum at night.

What you like about the product

It is a wonderful lotion that moisturizes and helps restore the protective skin barrier. It’s oil-free, lightweight and easily absorbed without feeling greasy. It is developed with dermatologists and has an unique formula – 3 essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid – to help with the texture and smoothness of the skin. It is also fragrance free to avoid fragrance irritation, in other words, it is gentle on the skin.

How you found it

A number of TikTok skincare gurus are huge fans of CeraVe and swear by all their products, so I decided to give the lotion a shot. It was extremely convenient to access – I believe most Targets carry CeraVe products. Ever since I started using it, my entire skincare routine was significantly transformed and simplified. I used to use more than five products on my face at night, but with the lotion, I am now only using the CeraVe face wash, Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair and the lotion. There hasn’t been a dramatic change on my skin, but my skin feels healthy and its condition is stable- I break out way less frequently now!

Backstage Glow Face Palette (001 Universal) by Dior

How often you use it

When I do my makeup and after I apply finishing powder on my face – I apply the color “white” on the inner corners of my eyes, on my brow bone, on my nose bridge and on the tip of my nose (leaving a space in between to apply bronzer – that’s how I contour my nose); I apply the color “pink” on my cheekbones; and when I go out to say a club, I apply the color “bronze” under my cheekbones.

What you like about the product

It’s gorgeously shimmery with the color white, gold, pink and bronze that will work on all skin tones. Pros: The shimmer makes your skin look shiny and healthy without making it look oily. The design is so beautiful that sometimes just by looking at the palette I feel content. White is suitable for daily uses, for example, on the inner corners of your eyes and other colors are perfect for when you go out at night – I sometimes use them as my eyeshadows. Cons: It can get messy. After an entire day of being outside and wearing makeup, I’d notice small glitters under my eyes that had fallen from the inner corners of my eyes.

How you found it

At Sephora. I was attracted by its look right away and after swabbing it on the back of my hand and feeling how even the application was, I was immediately in love. 3 Friends Picking their Top 3 Beauty Items Part VI

The 3 beauty products 3 of my friends swear by.

Just like beauty products, there are different friends for every occasion and season in life. Some are great to hang out at parties with, like a glitter shadow. Some are perfect for getting advice from, like a good color corrector. And some are great workout buddies, I’m looking at you rose facial mist. Not one friend will be your end-all-be-all and that’s a good thing. Each friend has their special place, which makes for a complete circle of friends and a well balanced make up bag. (Stay tuned for next weeks 3 friends and 3 picks).

Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides

How often you use it

Every morning in my coffee

What you like about the product

As you age, your body starts to produce less collagen which is essential for skin elasticity, joint health, and so many other benefits. It’s flavorless, and I definitely can tell a difference in my hair and skin. The collagen also acts as a protein powder, so you feel more full after drinking it.

Vitamin C Ester Brightening Serum by Perricone MD

How often you use it

Daily after cleansing before SPF

What you like about the product

The bottle feels fancy and old timey with the brown tint and medical dropper! Unlike some Vitamin C serums that can feel sticky, this one does not. I noticed a huge improvement in the brightness of my skin, elasticity, as well as the general texture and tone.

Stretch Concealer by Glossier

How often you use it

Daily, in replacement of an all over foundation. I use it to cover up blemishes and dark under eyes.

What you like about the product

I love how this concealer is light and not cakey at all. The worst feeling ever is when I feel my concealer cracking or building up in the crevices on my face and this is one of the few products I have tried that does not do that. I was finally able to find a product where I was able to have the coverage I wanted without the heavy cakey feeling that concealer usually has.

How you found it

I found the product in the glossier store in Soho. The store was too pretty to not buy anything and I was so glad I ended up buying the concealer!

Instant Detox Mask by Caudalie

How often you use it

Once or twice a week. Whenever I feel like my skin needs an extra boost.

What you like about the product

I have combination-oily skin and this product is able to minimize my pores, make my skin feel less greasy while still not creating dry flakes all over my skin. On top of using it all over my face on a weekly basis, it works amazing for spot treatment on acne. If I get a breakout, I put a little bit of this mask on the spots after a hot shower and it works like magic.

How you found it

It was recommended to me at a French pharmacy. My skin was getting really angry at the city air and I was getting a lot more breakouts than usual, the pharmacist recommended this mask for my combination skin type. I have been in love with this product since!

Normaderm Anti-Acne Double-Action Moisturizer with Salicylic Acid by Vichy

How often you use it

This is my daily moisturizer.

What you like about the product

I have combination skin, leaning more towards oily so a lot of moisturizers leave my skin feeling greasy and most cause breakouts for me even when they are marketed for my skin type. This moisturizer works amazing for me because it contains salicylic acid to prevent breakouts without making my skin flakey. The moisturizer absorbs into the skin really fast leaving a glowy dewy look.

How you found it

I had finished another bottle of the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel (which was the brand I had been using since middle school) and that was when I realized that it was doing nothing for my skin. That was when I decided to do my own research over what ingredients might actually help my skin and that is how I stumbled upon this product. I have rebought it countless times now and I will refuse to use any other moisturizer.

Vitamin C Skin Boost Instant Smoother by The Body Shop

How often you use it

Every morning as a serum and/or moisturizer.

What you like about the product

Truly a holy grail product for me! This serum makes my skin super soft to the touch and gives it a youthful, almost glittery glow. I love that it evens out my skin tone and minimizes the appearance of any blemishes. Its slight citrus-y scent is very refreshing!

Gelatin Powder (Flavorless) by Great Lakes

How often you use it

This is an essential part of my everyday bedtime regimen! I try not to eat anything 3 hours prior to bed and right before I hit the lights, I consume 2 heaped spoonfuls of gelatin powder and down it with water.

What you like about the product

Those who know me well know that I swear by this! Gelatin powder thickens and lengthens my hair and nails, increases the collagen density of my skin, aids my weight loss efforts, strengthens my bones, increases brain function and so much more! I consume this on an empty stomach right before bed so that I don’t wake up feeling bloated.

Rose Water Toner by Fresh

How often you use it

Every morning and night after cleansing my skin.

What you like about the product

I love this product because it makes my skin look and feel refreshed! It immediately soothes and brightens my face and it helps reduce any redness on my skin. I usually stray away from scented skincare products but the fragrance of this toner is subtle and very calming.

How you found it

When I ran out of my local Chilean brand rose water toner in college, I frantically looked for an alternative that would work similarly on my sensitive skin. After testing several toners which ended up irritating my skin, I stumbled upon this one and have loved the way it makes my face feel.

3 Friends Picking their Top 3 Beauty Items Part V

The 3 beauty products 3 of my friends swear by.

Throughout my life, friends have always been the most important to me. For any friend of mine, I would stop everything to be by their side and I know that some of my closest friends would always do the same. Through my friends, I have been able to learn about different cultures and perspectives, how people approach different situations, how different people chose to spend their time, and everything in between. With every friend, I have learned something about myself too. What I value, why I am different, how I want to be, where I want to spend my time- the list goes on. That is the beauty in having true friendships, there is an unspeakable harmony in two people who are so incredibly different, sharing time and growing alongside one another. Sharing beauty tips is great, but it is only an infinitely small part of why I love my friends. (Stay tuned for next weeks 3 friends and 3 picks).

It does an amazing job at cleansing the skin/ taking off makeup, yet is very gentle and hydrating.

Lucas Papaw Ointment

How often you use it

I’ve been using this ointment everyday for the past 3 years. I usually apply it on my lips when they’re feeling chapped and even on my face before I apply my makeup. If my skin is feeling extra dry, I also apply the ointment on the areas that need moisture before I go to bed.

What you like about the product

I love this product because it is so compact, I carry it around in my purse when I go out and in my backpack when I go to school. Unlike other lip balms or ointments, this product really keeps my lips and skin moisturized all throughout the day. Because of this pandemic, I’ve been wearing face masks everyday, which often leaves my skin feeling dry. With the help of this product, I’m able to keep my skin moisturized and healthy.

How you found it

After I started college in Boston, I noticed my skin getting a lot drier than usual because of the cold weather. When I raised this issue to my mom, she suggested this product and I’ve been using it religiously ever since.

Revitalash Advanced Eyelash Conditioner & Serum

How often you use it

I use this product once a day, usually before I apply my makeup. Sometimes I use this product at night if I decide to not wear makeup that day.

What you like about the product

I love this product because I can really see a difference in my eyelashes after using it regularly. I’ve tried other eyelash serums before Revitalash, and I noticed little to no difference in my eyelashes. Since I wear eyelash extensions, my lashes carry more weight than natural lashes so it is important for me to keep them strong and healthy. After using this product, I noticed my natural lashes growing longer and thicker, which also prevents my extensions from falling off too easily.

How you found it

After complaining about how easily my lashes fall off to my lash technician, she suggested this product and guaranteed that I would see results. Needless to say she was definitely right.

Brow Wiz by Anastasia Beverly Hills

How often you use it

I use this product every time I leave my house. When I don’t feel like putting on a full face of makeup, I just use this product on my eyebrows and it makes me feel and look so much more confident.

What you like about the product

I love this product because it is so easy to use. The texture is waxy, so I’m able to create lighter brows by using the eyebrow pencil with a light hand, yet I’m also able to create darker brows by applying this product with a little more pressure. This product lasts all day, is easy to use, and is my absolute favorite makeup product of all time.

How you found it

I’ve seen a lot of beauty influencers on Youtube and Instagram use this product when I was in high school, but I was never able to get my hands on them as they weren’t sold in Indonesia yet. It wasn’t until college was I able to finally purchase this product, and I’ve been loving it ever since.

Ultimate Arch Definer & Clear Brow Gloss by BBB London

How often you use it

Every day!

What you like about the product

Having tried MANY different brow pencils, brushes, etc, I found this one and would never use anything else…it’s AMAZING. The arch definer is the best at building a very natural look that matches the colour of my eyebrows (which are a strange in between colour), plus has a great little brush at the end to blend it in. The gloss is also so great and creates a great shape that holds in place literally all day. I sometimes just do my eyebrows and nothing else as it makes such a significant difference to my look.

Liquidlast Eyeliner – Brown or Pointblack by MAC

How often you use it

Usually everyday but in lockdown times only when I’m seeing people !

What you like about the product

My eyes are quite sensitive and also water a lot,  and my face doesn’t seem to like make up staying on all day (!! It slides off my face instantly!). I’ve tried so SO many different liquid eyeliners, including more expensive ones, and nothing stays on like the MAC one.  It doesn’t budge whatsoever, even if swimming or whatever.

The 3 beauty products 3 of my friends swear by.

The best beauty products are like friends: they help us shine, they are always there when times get tough, and they help us feel like our best selves. As someone who did not always feel comfortable wearing make up, my friends have helped me learn about what best products work for me- that help me feel my best and not overshadow who I am. I am so grateful for those who have taken the time to guide me through Sephora or gift me products to help me through my beauty journey. So when the times get tough, I know I have my friends and a touch of Tarte eyeshadow (thanks Jahnvi!) to carry me through the day. How often you use it

I use this whenever I feel like it’s a little more difficult to run my fingers through my hair in the shower, so once or twice a month. I also leave it on for longer than the suggested ten minutes – I quickly wash my hair once to remove excess oil and dry shampoo residue, gently wring out as much water as I can, and apply the Olaplex root to tip. I leave it on for maybe two or three hours while I do stuff around the house or watch something on Netflix. It’s important to shampoo afterward too!

What you like about the product

It’s the only hair mask I’ve tried that actually repairs the hair shaft so the nourishing effects are still noticeable a few washes after application. My hair looks and feels a lot healthier and less damaged, so I need less recent haircuts despite my balayage treatment.

How you found it

It seems like everyone was talking about Olaplex last year, and for good reason.

Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Light Wand in Goldgasm

How often you use it

Whenever I wear a little more makeup than usual, especially if my skin is looking dull.

What you like about the product

I’ve suffered from dry skin for a minute, but last summer was downright intolerable. My skin looked red, angry, and more flaky than that friend who cancels plans when you’re about to call your Uber. When I tried this product on at a Chestnut Hill Bloomingdale’s, everything just seemed to calm down. I wore it home and Facetimed a friend and I just stared at my glowy cheekbones the whole time. My sad dry skin suddenly looked revitalized. I also love how natural the Glowgasm shade looks! It truly gives the illusion of perfect skin.

How you found it

I’ve followed Charlotte Tilbury on Instagram for a few years and it’s one of my dreams to have my makeup done by her. Every look is an absolute dream. I finally pulled the trigger on this product after seeing @milki.milki.milki, a really cool pair of Pakistani girls, rave about it on their blog.

Retin A 0.025% (mine is Janssen-Cilag, but I imagine others work well as long as the component is the same – tretinoin)

How often you use it

I use this product 1-2 times a week, mixed into my moisturizer. I have very dry sensitive skin that has been damaged in the past due to improper retinoid use, so I’m being very careful not to overdo it.

What you like about the product

You can’t beat the OG HG. Retin A has been around forever – it’s the most well-researched vitamin A derivative and the results are evident. When I apply it, I consistently wake up with a reduced pore appearance and a more even complexion. It’s also the only product (along with SPF!) with proven anti-aging properties. I can’t wait until my skin grows to tolerate it so I can start applying it more regularly.

How you found it

As mentioned, I tried an over the counter retinoid a couple of years ago that absolutely *murdered* my skin’s moisture barrier, so I was terrified of ever trying the component again. My sister promised me I would be amazed if I used Retin A correctly, and gifted me with her expired tube. It still worked well, but was just a bit weaker. I loved it and haven’t looked back.

How often you use it

I use this product every time I wash my hair. I apply this product when I get out of the shower, while my hair is still damp. After I apply this product, I either let my hair air-dry, or I use a blow dryer. This product enhances my naturally-curly hair, and also makes it super easy to style if I want to switch up my look.

What you like about the product

Saints & Sinners Velvet Divine Leave-In Conditioner leaves my hair feeling incredibly moisturized and healthy. A small amount of this product goes a long way, and helps eliminate frizz and makes it easier to style my hair! The product is actually a thick cream, but can be sprayed as a mist. It is also free of sulfates and parabens, harmful ingredients that are present in most hair care products: I try to haircare products that have the best ingredients, but I have found that it is rare to find a product that uses quality ingredients AND performs the way I want it to. I also change my hair a ton! I have had extensions, my hair is naturally curly (but also thermally damaged because I style it so much), and I also color my hair quite often. Regardless of my hair style or condition, Saints & Sinners products leave my hair feeling repaired and restored.

How you found it

(Shameless plug) Saints & Sinners Haircare is actually a company my family owns! My mom, a licensed cosmetologist, formulated all the products after discovering a gap in the market- so many hair care products perform well, but only because they use poor ingredients. Conversely, the hair care products that use healthy ingredients tend to under-perform. Saints & Sinners Haircare uses the best ingredients but also does it’s job in making your hair look AND feel its best. This is the only haircare that I use.

How often you use it

I use this product to complete my makeup look. Adding a shiny lip is on trend right now, and I love using it with a simple day-to-day look (simple eyeshadow, light makeup, etc…). I really love this product for a spring and summer look, since it’s super light but adds just enough pigment to look somewhat natural.

What you like about the product

This product doesn’t dry out my lips (if anything, it is super moisturizing! It uses an ingredient called cherry oil, which actually protects against drying), and it lasts a really long time! It’s not sticky at all, and it adds a lot of shine and dimension. I love how it’s tinted too, my favorite shade is ‘rosewood,’ as it naturally brings out the color of my lips! I love wearing it with a champagne colored eyeshadow and light contour. It looks super natural but it also makes your lips pop!

How you found it

I go shopping with my sorority sisters quite a bit. My friend, Liz Castellano (who has the BIGGEST makeup addiction I have ever seen), actually recommended it! I love shopping with friends: it has taken a lot of trial and error to find a lip gloss that I consistently use, so it is super helpful to get opinions and recommendations from your friends who are also going through the same trial and error process.

How often you use it

I use this product in the morning and night, after washing my face. I like to use a toner first, and then I apply this serum (I use a roller to make sure it is absorbed into my skin) and follow it with a moisturizer!

What you like about the product

This product makes my skin texture look soooooo much more even! It also makes my skin look (and feel) super healthy. I spend a lot of time outside and in the sun during the summer months, so using this product has made my tan look so much better. I have also found that it has helped prevent acne: my skin is super sensitive so it is hard to find products that actually work that don’t irritate my skin. I also really like this product because it is free of a lot of the harmful ingredients you would find in a lot of other beauty products (parabens and sulfates, for example).

365 day & night – the only cleanser you’ll want or ever need to use!

What you like about the product

I have sensitive skin so it was great to find a cleanser that gently cleans and exfoliates. My skin feels super soft and moisturized after. It is really easy to foam and calming to use particularly before bed. The mainly plant-based ingredients naturally protect my skin from so many different things, making this a great all in one product.

How you found it

I use samples when I travel as a way to not only try new products, but pack light. When I got a sample of this cleanser, I ended up using it even after my trips. I was squeezing every last bit out of that container and lucky for me, only a small amount is needed each time so it lasted long enough for me to buy a full tube.

Typically any morning before I leave my apartment. For the beach, I typically alternate between this and a stronger face sunscreen.

What you like about the product

I don’t like to wear makeup everyday, so this is a great product for more natural coverage. It also has great sun protection (which is super important all year round) without clogging your skin like other creams with SPF.

How you found it

I was recommended this by the place I go to get facials. They said it is great for everyday protection from sun exposure and minimizes acne.

How often you use it

All the time – In the morning I will put a little on my lips and eyelids to make sure I am moisturized. I had a friend who would even use it as a highlighter on her cheekbones. During winter nights, I will lather a bit more on any dry spots of my skin.

What you like about the product

My lips can get very dry and cracked in the winter, so it has always been a great solution that is quick & reliable. A friend also shared with me that Aquaphor is great for preventing wrinkles because of the level of hydration it provides skin, so I use a little around my eyes when it feels dry. If you have some in warmer settings, the product takes on a more liquid consistency similar to an oil or serum. I prefer this because it makes it easy to get a more glossy look, while also using less product each time.

How you found it

It has always sat somewhere in the medicine cabinet since I was little. My parents would use it for my sensitive skin as a kid and I found that it’s an affordable solution to maintain good hydrated skin.

FENTY Skin Review with Chelsea Cates-Rollins

Breaking down the products behind Rihanna’s newest business success: skin care.

Photos taken from Fenty Beauty Website

It goes without saying that Rihanna has been taking retail by storm, redefining industry norms and playing by her own rules: FENTY rules. First Rihanna made waves with FENTY Beauty, providing an incredible 40 shade range foundation- along with some other pretty amazing products. The company’s diverse range of products landed its rightful place on Time Magazine’s 25 best inventions of 2017 and even sparked major beauty retailers, such as L’Oréal, to begin selling and marketing deeper cosmetic shades for woman of color. Next it was Savage X FENTY, a lingerie company, which again emphasized inclusivity, showcasing a range of skin tones and sizes for women of all colors and shapes. After lingerie, Rihanna was after the rest of the body with her FENTY fashion brand. FENTY was released under the LVMH group, making Rihanna the first woman and woman of color ever to create a fashion brand with LVMH. Now, Rihanna is after skincare with FENTY Skin, having recently premiered 3 products in its new line. I had the privilege to speak with my good friend Chelsea Cates-Rollins who was able to get her hands on these highly sought after products. Chelsea, take it away!

(Make sure to scroll to the bottom of this post to see Chelsea’s full video review as well!)

Chelsea, tell us a little about yourself and for how long you have been a beauty enthusiast?

I am 23 years old and currently working in NYC in digital media after graduating from Babson College in 2018. I have always been into anything and everything beauty – hair, nails, makeup etc. My earliest memory is playing in my moms makeup when I was 10 years old and taking a picture, I thought was so cute at the time, but definitely cringe worthy now.

What made you want to purchase Rihanna’s FENTY Skin products?

I LOVE Rihanna, I’m pretty sure if you ask any of my friends they would tell you the same. When she first came out with Fenty Beauty I bought one of their first products, which was the Gloss Bomb and loved it! After that I said “if Rihanna comes out with a skincare line I’ll buy it” and lo and behold she did and I bought it.

Can you give us a quick rundown of each product and your initial impressions?

She came out with 3 products in her first launch and, before I go into detail, one of those was a Sunscreen, which I appreciated especially coming from a Black woman. Specifically, in the Black community applying sunscreen isn’t normalized and I think that was a great first addition to the line. Now going into my overall first impressions…

Screen Shot 2020-08-23 at 4.42.22 PM

Cleanser (rating: 9/10)

The cleanser suds up really well and gives your face a fresh clean feeling without drying it out which is amazing!! The only reason I didn’t give this a full 10/10 is because although it smells great, fragrance can be harsh for a lot of people’s skin so that eliminates a few candidates. And, although the packaging is great for travel because it is a twist cap, a bit of the cleanser dries up on the cap and touches whatever surface you put it on which can also be a bit harmful for people with sensitive skin.

Screen Shot 2020-08-23 at 4.42.37 PM

“Fat Water” a.k.a Toner (rating: 9/10)

Similar to the cleanser, it’s just the packaging that deducts that one point, mainly because it is a bit harder of a plastic and you can accidentally use too much product pushing (which I have done….multiple times). Other than that, I love the Fat Water and I actually see a physical difference, mainly in the amount of oil my face accumulates. I have combination skin, but it’s more oily than dry and since this is a pore refining toner it doesn’t help get rid of large pores, but definitely helps shrink them a.k.a less oil on your face throughout the day!!

Screen Shot 2020-08-23 at 4.43.04 PM

Sunscreen SPF 30 (rating: 10/10)

And finally the sunscreen, my favorite honestly. I love this stuff! It does have a bit of fragrance so sensitive skin people be warned, but it’s not overwhelming. It smells great, isn’t greasy, you don’t need to use a lot of product, and the bottle is reusable! So, anytime you need a refill you only need to purchase the inside portion with the actual product. This is probably my favorite packaging because of that, and it also travels well. A lot of people use this as a moisturizer, which it technically is based on the name,  but I personally still use a moisturizer and add this on top as my sunscreen.

What is your favorite product out of the collection and why?

I already brought this up, but definitely the sunscreen! I do like all the products and I have seen a difference in my skin, but the sunscreen is really my favorite. Not only because it looks great, smells great, and feels great, but because it’s promoting more people to protect their skin from the sun and I love that!

How do these products compare to the skin care products that you already own?

I dibble and dabble in a lot of different products, but since quarantine i’ve been doing a bit more research trying to understand things and I do enjoy these products better. I still use my other serums in my routine, but I haven’t yet switched back to my old cleanser, toner, and sunscreen. Will I? Not sure maybe, it’s only been about a week and a half since I started using Fenty Skin, so time will tell. For now though, I am going to stick to using Fenty Skin. I think there are a lot of comparable products, but in the end it’s all about what you believe your skin needs and listening to it when a product it doesn’t agree with your skin.

Are these products worth their price?

I for sure think these are worth the price!! Skin care is generally expensive if you’re going for more high end products and I have paid more for other skin care products than I have for these, i’ll admit. So if you’re looking for a bit more of an upscale product, you won’t break the bank, but this isn’t your standard drug store skin products (and nothing wrong with your typical drugstore products I use them too), but compared to a Drunk Elephant, Youth to the People, or other similar to this, Fenty Skin is definitely more affordable!

Are these products something you can see yourself using every day and replacing your old products with?

Yes for sure! I already replaced my old everyday products for these and I use these products day and night, besides the sunscreen I only use that during the day. Overall, these products aren’t harsh, do not try out your skin, and are super easy to incorporate into your everyday life busy or not.

Last question. What are your overall final impressions of Rihanna’s skin care debut and do you think her line competes with other popular brands, such as Kylie Skin, The Ordinary, and Glossier?

In all honesty I haven’t tried Kylie Skin or Glossier, but I moved from The Ordinary toner (which I loved and still do love) to the Fat Water Toner. I really like Fat Water Toner, mainly because I saw a difference in my pores after the first night I used it. I still use my ordinary serums in my everyday routine and I still use my drug store Ceerave moisturizer and aloe vera gel, but for the products that did get replaced by Rihanna’s products I will miss, but at the moment don’t plan on going back.

How often you use it

I have been using this face wash every night for the last 2 years. I like to use their Treatment Enzyme Exfoliating Powder Cleanser together with their face wash three times a week, or when I am wearing heavy makeup, or when my face is feeling particularly dirty (usually in the summer when I tend to feel and get very sweaty). This combination leaves my face feeling super clean and soft. The trick is to let the enzyme cleanser sit on your face for about a minute after massaging it in for 60 seconds, this really allows the enzymes to eat away at the dead skin. I also try to massage the cleanser into my face for 60 seconds but sometimes I get lazy or am in a rush.

What you like about the product

It gets my face clean without drying it out, it is super gentle and hydrating, and it also smells amazing. Normally, items that have a fragrance irritate my skin but this doesn’t.

How you found it

I was looking for a new everyday cleanser for a while and a friend of mine who I consult with on virtually anything I buy recommended it to me. She had gotten a trial sample for free, loved it, and ended up buying it (along with the whole product line), so I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed.

How often you use it

I use it on my blemishes as soon as I spot them, I dab a bit on with my finger (you can use a q-tip), and it dries it right up. I usually use it at night, it’s the last thing I put on my face when I am getting ready to go to bed. Be careful not to use too much and not to get it too close to your eyes, I made this mistake one too many times. It stings!

What you like about the product

All you need is a little bit, use it a couple of days, like 2 or 3, depending on the size of your blemish, and the blemish pretty much disappears without a trace.

How you found it

Reading hundreds of online reviews on how to get rid of a blemish fast, haha.

How often you use it

I use this every day in the morning all year round. When I know that I will be out in the direct sunlight all day, I will swap this out for Avene Reflexe Solaire 50+.

What you like about the product

Sunscreen is tricky for people with a darker complexion, most tend to leave a white cast. I try to look for a sunscreen that won’t make me look ashy, and with the Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer SPF 15, I am moisturizing and protecting myself from the sun.

How you found it

My favorite Instagrammer, Melissa’s Wardrobe, recommended this product. She always recommends the best stuff. She has a hashtag #melmademedoit, anything she recommends on her stories usually sells out fast. Also, her stories are HILARIOUS, literally watch them like a t.v show, check her out! So yeah, she recommended it and I tried it and loved it. I have been using it every morning for the last 3 years? Maybe longer.

How often you use it

Every day

What you like about the product

It’s an amazing serum for the hair. Whether you have curly, straight, or wazy, all hair types can benefit. It adds shine, softness, and makes your hair look and feel healthier. Definitely a ride or die product.

How you found it

I was searching for a hair oil, and I saw this one got great reviews. I have also loved the brand KERASTASE, as I prefer salon-quality products for my hair. I bought it and fell in love, and it has always been a product I repurchase.

How often you use it

I use it every time I wear makeup.

What you like about the product

Everything about this product is amazing. The pigmentation, blendability, shade range, and finish are incredible. As someone of color, it can be difficult to find a bronzer deep enough, and with a warm undertone. ABH’s have bronzers for all skin tones, and this product can be used in multiple ways and is fantastic all around.

How you found it

I was shopping in Sephora, and ABH is my all-time favorite brand, so I went over to look, and I saw they just released their bronzers. I decided to buy one, and it became one of my cult favorites.

How often you use it

Every time I want to style my hair (about 1 to 2x week)

What you like about the product

I love this product because it is so easy to use, and non-damaging on your hair. As someone with thick, coarse hair, blow-drying normally takes forever, and it takes a lot of effort to smooth your hair in the process. With the Dyson, it is extremely powerful, yet gentle on their hair, making the process fast, and leaving your hair look great.

How you found it

When Dyson’s first hair dryer launched in 2016, it quickly grew and received hype as Dyson entered the hair industry. I held off buying it for a while because I didn’t think the price point was justified. However, I quickly got sick of my current blow-dryer and decided to purchase it.

Dr. Jart moisturizer in the morning & the Rose cream at night

What you like about the product

The Dr. Jart moisturizer is fabulous for the day because it has SPF 30 to protect you from the sun and helps soothe redness. It’s perfect for the days I bravely enable the video feature on Zoom meetings because it provides light coverage. I like the Rose cream because it’s very hydrating and you will wake up looking like a glowing bébé.

How you found it

I found the Dr. Hauschka Rose Cream just perusing Whole Foods and the Dr. Jart cream was recommended to me by a blessed Sephora employee.

How often you use it

I use this all the time and will admit I have 4 tubes. It is perfect for any occasion whether it be going to the grocery store for an exciting jaunt during quarantine or wilding out on the dance floor- pre-COVID 😦

What you like about the product

The color Fenty Glow looks amazing on everyone! Additionally, the formula is long-wearing enough so you don’t have to reapply all the time but not too sticky.

How you found it

Rihanna’s Instagram, I’m a loyal enthusiast of her music & other ventures

Whenever I wash my hair

What you like about the product

The Seanik shampoo bar gives the hair great volume but Lush also sells other types that cater to a wide variety of hair goals. There is no plastic packaging and you can just store the bars in a metal tin which is a good way to reduce some waste in your personal care routine. I love the Briogeo conditioner primarily because I have curly hair and the product is very rich and moisturizing. As an added bonus, it smells like a tropical island paradise and is vegan, cruelty-free and deemed “clean” by Sephora’s standards. These two are just a brilliant pairing.

How you found it

I learned about the shampoo bars from a friend and heard about Briogeo through a podcast! The founder Nancy Twine just did another podcast episode for “How I Built This” & I highly recommend listening to her story!

Stay tuned for next week’s post where my friends Victoria Kawas, Devyn Wilson, and Nicole Yapijakis share their three beauty favorites!
